Pump/valve question
« on: June 02, 2012, 06:24:38 pm »
I need to fit a valve to my pole/hose to save water. My question is, once i close the valve and stop the flow, it will cut my pump out, should I then walk to my van and turn the controller off, or is it ok just to leave it till after ive trad the bottoms? (for example)

Will it damage the pump or anything else?

Thanks, James.

just fit a tap to the end of your reel hose , when you shut it off the pressure switch will do the rest .

Why are you tradding bottoms ?

so long as the pump is not set to high wont be a problem if you have good hoselock fittings on the d i vessel
shiney one

Yes, if the controller you have is connected to the pump via a fully functioning pressure switch at the top of the pump (the one with wires coming out.) (See your previous correspondence regarding pressure switch identification.)

The controller Nat gave you just reduces the speed the pump motor runs at so reduces the water flow to your brush. If you have wired the pump controller correctly to the pressure switch, then once the in line pressure builds up after you turn your tap off, the pressure switch will cut the power to the motor and it will stop. The pressure switch is just an on/off switch which switches off when the pressure limit is reached.

If my memory serves me, you had a problem with the pump cutting out and restarting (pulsing) when you changed from garden hose to microbore. If this is what I think it was, you have a working pressure switch. Put a tap/flow controller on it and you should be ok.

@ P@F - Thats just how ive decided to go about the switch over. Ive told customers that ive converted mainly for saftey reasons. Give it a few months and ill prob pole the lot  ;)

@ Firefly - My di vessel does leak ever so slightly, when controller is turned up. Its coming from the 'in' connector o the vessel.

@ - Spruce - Your memory is spot on and will fit a valve with no worries next week. Most helpful, thanks.

You will find replacement hozelock 'o' rings on ebay. We have to change the 'O' rings on the hose reel fairly often so a packet of 10 is always a useful spare.

James go to www.gardinerpolesystems.co.uk    and get the EZ-Snap hose valve with end stop .

You will also need the EZ-Snap male tail to fit in the end of your pole hose which will connect to the hose valve end stop its well built and robust .

You will need 2  protecta balls to go either side of  the hose valve to stop it  becoming damaged , I use 2 rubber dogs play balls from asda they are about £2;00 for a pack of 3 they are a high density rubber foam form of ball .

Quite light but heavy enough to be durable . Mike

This is my recommendation.

http://www.aqua-dapter.co.uk/aqua-dapter/   with a length of red hose.

This may be a little more expensive than an on/off tap to begin with but will pay for itself in no time. We used on/off taps for years and went through dozens of them. The main problem is that they get dragged along the ground, get accidently stood on, the screw holding the lever works loose and gets lost and we have had a shaft break.

We find we have virtually instant control - pull on the hose out of the bottom of the pole and water is either switched on or off instantly.

You will need one a 6mm one of these for the end of your microbore.

http://www.aqua-dapter.co.uk/hose-fittings/end-stop-female-socket-connector-rectus-21/

and a 6mm hose tail.

http://www.aqua-dapter.co.uk/hose-fittings/male-hosetail-stainless-steel-6mm-rectus-21/

and a couple each of 5 - 7 mm and a couple each of the 7 - 9mm O Clips.

http://www.aqua-dapter.co.uk/hose-fittings/o-clips-2-ear-clamps/

I would also order a protector ball

http://www.aqua-dapter.co.uk/hose-fittings/protecta-ball/

but I do have a love / hate relationship with mine and wish someone would invent something that does the same job but better - thats another story.

The other thing you will need is a pair of pliers to crimp the 'o' clips.

You will be able to get a pair cheaper than this, but the picture shows how the 'O' clips work.

This is similar to what we used to use.

There's a check box so you need to order the one for microbore. I think you will also have to order an EZ snap 6mm hose tail for your pole hose. Gardiners also supply 'O' Clips.

I would still recommend the Aqua-dapter

I dont use O clips as if you dont get the cut on the hose right it will leak i use jubille clips next to hose valve end stop .

As for the protecta balls i used them in the past and overtime with working outside they become reduced in size and useless i prefer to stick with something robust just personal preference .

The screw does become loose on tap which i learned and did not tighten when i should have and had to buy another valve body as i lost tap end as well .

But now i carry my swiss army knife with me all the time which is a godsend in every aspect for quick fixes and the like without returning to tuck . Mike

What do you use that is more robust in place of a protector ball, if you don't mind me asking?

James, one thing you will find is that there are so many different products out there that most of us get to work fine for what we want. Nothing is perfect and there are plus and minises for just about everything. What works for one may not work for another.

There is a saying that there are only 2 sure things in life; death and taxes. I've added a 3rd - WFP equipment wears out and/or breaks.
