hose reel tips (please)
« on: April 26, 2012, 06:35:02 pm »
Hi  all.

Got my hose reel and micro bore from gardiners, yesterday weather too bad to work so set it up, had trouble with hose got it tangled  :'(

Got there in the end managed about half a day today bl00dy weather were getting :(

Just wondered if there's any tips to make life easier.

remember someone saying getting buffing mitt from halfords to hold hose when reeling in keeps clean.

I had hose reel on floor at back of my ford escort van, found bending down bit akward was also thinking of fixing hose reel to some scaffold board or similar (what fittings? is it pipe brackets?)

Thanks all.
Ps. felt funny on first job leaving freedom trolley on board but was getting into it.

Hope to eliminate most of my text the night before to unlock gate work by just using ladder to get over.

thanks guys

Personally i have my reel on the floor so i can face reel in the direction i am heading in. Somtimes i put it either on the right or left of pickup otherwise hose can get stuck under tyre sometimes .

I use pole hose to connect to hose reel instead of 1/2 inch hose . This allows me to shut back of pickup and put alarm on .

Dont know if this will work out the back of van but worth a try i would rather leave mine locked and secure.  Mike

just use a sill cloth you dont want to waste time putting a glove on every time you wind in imo

I always use an old scrim when winding hoses in,as you say keeps em nice & clean, regarding hose reels,I would deffo bolt em to the floor of your van,I used to drag em in & out when I had a trailer set up,waste's time & energy, you'll be surprised how much quicker & easier it is with em bolted in.

If the hose was tangled from the start, something was seriously wrong.  I think you need to get it right from the outset.

So, the hose arrives in a bundle, looped.  If you drag it off the bundle as it lies on the floor onto your hose reel, you're heading for trouble, as by unwinding it from the reel pell-mell, you're twisting it once for every loop in the original bundle.

The solution requires two people.  One winds onto the reel, the other stands with the new hose unreeling it (as though it's on its own reel, so spinning the whole bundle) as fast as the other guy reels it on.  That way, you don't introduce any twists from the off.

Hope that description makes sense.

Same as the other replys, keep the reel facing the same way as you are working, when reeling back in i use a damp microfibre, makes it easier to place on the reel and keeps the hose free from grit and crap.
