SL - X35 - Gooseneck problem
« on: April 16, 2012, 10:17:09 pm »
Hi guys,

Just taken order of an SL - X35 from Gardiner, with standard gooseneck.

I have a problem with the gooseneck itself, I've screwed it all together, (not too tight) and when I push the clamp into place the bolt is jumping down the thread.

Anyone else have this problem? Disappointed as I didn't expect problems, plus i need to use it tomorrow morning... Surely a metal nut would be more efficient!

A trip to Homebase for some new nuts and bolts is probably on the cards.

I don't understand why they don't do metal nuts, I had same problem with my clx, I robbed a barrel nut off the 1st section while waiting for new nuts from gardiners thru the post, they did say I had over tightened it but I really don't feel as tho I did, if Alex pops on this post-any thoughts on metal barrel nuts..?

you should always have a few spare mate IMO.ive never had any problems with mine.never broke one either in 2 years of wfp.i have a flipfast on mine.THEY ARE GREAT!!

i have ordered a carbon gooseneck for my SLX and a few bits so i can fit an aqua-daptor to it as well.

one thing that does get on my nerves is screw on brushes that dont line up properly on the end of standard angle adaptors but i wont have this problem when i get the carbon gooseneck as they screw directly onto the brush head.

best wishes

Lee, you should contact Alex directly! regarding barrel nut, not the point to have a very light pole if you add a metal nut!!!!

Hi Lee

Is the problem with the Resi-Neck quick adjuster? If so it sounds like the thread has stripped on the barrel nut. Could be because of a slightly faulty moulding or because it was over-tightened. Either way please contact the office directly on 01726 66400 and they will be able to sort you out with a strengthened barrel nut.

We purposely do not use metal barrel nuts on the pole clamps for two reasons:

1. The nylon moulded nuts also act as a lock nut and hold the bolt in its place - a metal barrel nut would not be able to do this.
2. We want to keep the barrel nut as a 'fail-safe' point. If these are replaced with a metal nut then there is a strong chance with an older pole that if the lever bolt is over-tightened that the clamp would now be strong enough to crush a worn tube section. A nylon barrel nut is much cheaper to replace than a carbon section.

These are the reasons for the nylon choice. However we do have a supply of hard aluminium barrel nuts which we will send out for those that need them on the Resi-Neck if for some reason they like to have them tighter than we would recommend. They can also be used on the clamp assemblies, but then need to be paired with a bolt with Nylock built-in (which we now also have) - they will be issued with a warning that any crushing damage that they then cause to sections will be at the users own risk (unlikely but possible). If required for clamps they will need to be purchased from us.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I've spoken to Gardiners this morning, very helpful, they will send me a new barrel nut in the post for free.

I was just in a slight panic last night as it had arrived yesterday and I needed it for a job this morning. A few spares would definitely be handy.
