Carbon Block or GAC ?
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:03:01 am »
Just about to order some replacement pre filters from Gardiners.

I run twin "20" pre filters and have a sediment and a carbon block.

Just seen a prefilter called a GAC or a granual activated carbon filter.

Anyone know the difference between a carbon block and a GAC ?? ??

Which one is best ?? ??

Would moving to a triple pre filter be over kill ??

Thanks for listening  ;D

I have all three 10", don't know the difference between Carbon and GAC but that's how it came so I've left it like that. ;D

As far as I understand it, each filter removes certain ellements in trhe water.
I can remember when waking up stiff in the morning was a good thing.

The Carbon Block and the Granular Activated Carbon filter both remove Chlorine from the water - Technically both will work well.

In a triple system it is best to have the GAC in the middle as this provides the greater surface area for contact with chlorinated water. The Carbon Block will come last as it also helps with particulate filtration.

In a twin system it is best to have a sediment and then a carbon block.

Ian a triple filter really is not needed have been using sediment and then a carbon block myself for years now and never had a problem with it.

Just remember to flush it through disconnected from the Ro as that can and will screw up your RO
