Why not?

Go in, ask to speak to manager etc, give him your sales patter try and squeeze in your price, if not immediately interested, leave a card for reference.

Wont be as easy with big firms, but for your high street stuff and local businesses its probably
the best way

Yell.com is probably the best way forward and make a website so potential customers can see you look profesional.

not necessary.first time i had an advert in yell.com was free and i picked a commercial worth over £400 a month and did it for 18 months.i now have a paid advert which was ok .the odd job came trough but in november another commercial called from yell.com and picked that one which again is just over £400 /month.which isn't too bad .in 1 1/2 months it's already paid for whole year.i was undecided if i want too keep the advert for this year or not but after picking this job i decided that i'll keep it.

That is very good going.

We had paid advertising with them for about 5 years with minimal return. It kept getting more expensive as we tried different things on there, ended up at about £900 p/a which barely covered itself, so we opted out this year.

Nice to hear a good tale though.

I did a week last year of just canvassing shops, industrial parks, pubs, stuff like that. It's surprising what you can get if you go in and ask, me and my mate even got a hotel by walking in, chatting to the receptionist for ten minutes, getting her to find out what they are being charged, then then pricing accordingly  ;) got the job on the spot.
