I guess he means the January tax payment, where you pay what you owe from the previous year and one half again for the next year. If that is so Ronnie, speak to your accountant and to HMRC. :)

you can reduce your payment on account part of tax bill as its based on previous year and you might have had a crap year this year. I have done it as a few years back my turnover went from 54k to 27k in a year.

Actually it can, very easily as it turns out. Payment of account is for folks who pay more than a certain amount of tax, sort of in advance. It is a prediction by HMRC, based on previous payment's. I have just had it reduced.

Correct. Earnings have reduced.

I've got a Pug 406 110hdi estate with a towbar for sale ronnie - it's on 172k and ten years old but it has two new mud and snow tyres on the front and its code faults are all fixed so now I average 200 a day and have a swanky new van I thought you might like it for 500 notes plus another 500 for the trailer system to go with it.  ;)

j/k!  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Helen and Paul.

You're welcome, at the end of the day it is only other human beings on the end of the phone at HMRC, never be worried about asking them something, remember they are the ones that know and if they can't answer you straight away they will point you in the right direction :)

two years ago when we had nearly 6 weeks of freezing snow i phoned hmrc and told them i didnt have enough money to pay the full amount, the nice lady told me i should have been putting enough money away each week to cover the bill.
i informed the nice lady i had been putting it away but the 6 weeks of hardly earning left me with a choice of paying the full amount or feeding my family, she understood that family come first, end result was i paib 70% of the bill on time and the other 30%(plus £25) fine by the end of march

I was able to pay in chunks a few years ago.

Rather than just having an extension on the date try to arrange monthly payments, they like the idea of the money at least trickling in. You still have to pay interest but will avoid fines for late payment.

Think I paid a couple of hundred pounds extra for three months. The more open you are with them the more willing they are to co-operate.

I pay £250 a month before the tax is due  and so usually find I've only got to find less than a grand at the end of January to "top up". Come summer I think it will be me staying in credit as I'm paying my new employee and attendant costs!
