 Hi everyone,

 I run a domestic cleaning service in Cornwall.  Regular cleans one off spring cleans etc.  I am currently looking into taking staff on I am going to pay them £5.50 per hour and put into pairs of two for each shift (9-1) or (11-4). 

 I am thinking of paying staff from the time they start the 1st appointment until they finish the last plus time in between for travelling.

My question is do you pay the driving employee to pick up client keys and schedules from the office or do you let cleaners hold client keys?

If i paid the driver to pick up keys i would have to pay her from the time she arrived at the office till the time she drops the keys back!   

Any thoughts on this would be very welcome!

I can't comment on the Domestic sector but in the Commercial sector the cleaners usually hold the keys at their home (as they are the regular cleaners). The Client is notified as a matter of course who holds the keys.

Would this not work in the Domestic sector?..........or do the cleaners change, resulting in keys having to be held at the office.

depending on who is your insuranve provider, you may find that you need to declare, how client keys are held,labelled and the names of the keyholders.

I would have thought it would be up to yourself from the begining wether you paid the drivers from when they pick up the keys from your office until they bring them back, or you pay them for the set hours you mentioned above.

Which ever way you go, you will need to have it in writting etc etc

I pay my cleaners from when they start loading up their vans to go to site till they arrive back and am finding that if the roads are very busy, then i am paying them for sitting in the van 

Sometimes costs a lot of money, so there is that to think about before you make your mind up.

I give keys out on a Friday for the coming week and check old keys in. its to fluid for me to have staff holding keys plus the customers would not like that I think?

 Hi there,

 I am not sure my customers would like staff holding onto their keys, they are assured their house keys are kept in a secure safe at all times other than on their cleaning day..  Another thing is if the regular cleaner who was holding the key was ill and couldn't turn up for work she would still have the key.

 After a lot of thought on this matter i think I will ask the driving employee to pick up any keys in the morning, then pick up co worker.  Also drop keys off after they have finished.  I will pay driving employee an extra half hour a day for this as most of the work is in the local area. 

Also do your staff work to a schedule of work with all tasks listed?  I am using this method at the moment.

This will be another reason for me to see the cleaners before they go to the houses.  I will be able to issue the task sheets for the shift and ensure they have enough supplies etc.
