People thinking their carpets smell.
« on: October 30, 2011, 01:07:28 pm »
Its happened 3 times in the last few weeks - Ive had calls from people saying their carpet smells and can I do anything for them.

Each time Ive gone round Ive not smelt anything unusual. Each time Ive been honest and said that I wasnt picking up what they were but I would clean the carpet and treat with Clensan. They all went ahead and had the jobs done and seemed happy enough as Ive not had any call backs ect saying the carpet still smelt.

Is it that Ive lost my sense of smell ??? ;D or do clients often have a psychological thing were they are in the room all the time and actually pick up on things that arent actually there.Has anyone else come across this?

Alot of smells are psychological I would clean and sanitize as you did offer no guarantee but with a thorough clean with the correct procedures you have a good chance of getting rid of the odour.

I had a string of those types of jobs where customer's complained of the smell after cleaning. I'd done nothing different in my approach and technique and was quietly concerned that I'd lost my carpet cleaning 'mojo'.... ;D

One thing did occur to me, the air outside was still and humid, I wondered if it was just a case of the carpets not getting a good airing... ??? I started to use the snail, just to get things going and had no other problems....

different temperatures, times of the day, moisture in the air can trigger smells in carpets, maybe you went at that time of day etc... when it wasn't as pungent. you did as the customer asked and was honest, newt wrong with that.

Alot of smells are psychological

I believe that too.
We lost our GSD about a year ago. This summer I took up the carpets (root cause of a lot of dog smell tbh) and put lam done, but from time to time my wife says she can still smell the dog around here, strangely I don't.

With regard to cleaning carpets, sometimes you can reactivate an underlying problem that is not there when everything is dry.

I had one where they said carpet was smelly in the morning. I asked if they had pets that may have had an accident or had the baby spilt any milk etc, they said no

When finished they said would it be dry by tonight as the dog sleeps in there.

Duh.

Also remember that generally speaking ladies have a better sense of smell than blokes.

Also remember that we sometimes go into a home and may think it a right "ponger" but the owners can't smell it because to them it is the usual "normal" smell.

Roger that's called habituation either that or they are just smelly beggars.

Wayne, just put some smelly stuff down and tell them it's sorted. (with conviction)

It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Some people have really smelly feet and as they walk aroind in their socks it is tranfered to the carpet.
I had this problem a few weeks ago, a week after i cleane dthe carpet they phoned to say the carpet was smelling. I went round and got my nose down close the pile. It was absolutely obvious, swetty feet smell.
I think the guy had been walking around a lot as the carpet was drying and his extra smelly sweaty foot odour had been absorned by the damp carpet.
I sprayed deod allover and brushed it in telling him to keep off unlass wearing clean slippers. Not heard anything back so assume it worked.

bad smells, like dog, especially if they had the dog for last 20 years or so, does not only hide in carpets, its wood and walls so repainting would make a difference. Also single cleaning of the carpet cant fix 20 years old smell. Sometimes they do smell really bad straight after cleaning but its a good thing. Carpet is drying and everything is in the air, so ventilation is most important thing to do.

I refused to do a job once where the lady had 14 cats that never went out.
It hit me in the face when she opened the door and the lounge carpet was rotten in the corners from pee.

I said I could not do it as carpet had had it and smelt rather. She said I was 'funny' and she could not smell anything catty.

The same thing has happened again today.Had a call asking if i can clean 3 rugs, went round to see them to be told that they'd been cleaned recently by another CC but they still smelt of dog oddour,

I unrolled them and they were clean, got on my knees and couldn't smell a thing. The woman was adamant that bthey smell.

As shes not in a hurry I told her that I would take them home when I'm not busy and clean and sanitize.

I really dont think they will get any cleaner though, would you just treat with Clensan and take them back?
