I have recently started using W5 Blue for trad.  I have onbe customer, v large contract, who has asked me back to reclean outsides (2 hours after cleaning) and now just asked me back 3 days after returning.

I have never had any problems before, and when I left I walked around and buffrd all windows with a microfibre and everything was great.

The only difference is I used hot water with these windows as customer has an external hot tap.

Customer states windows are smeared and poorly finished - am off to look in the morning. I have another customer who I use hot water for insides with no issues.

Any ideas?

if you are trad can i ask why you use a cloth after you have cleaned them

are you buffing all over, if so why?

in my opinion the only cloth worth wiping the edges with is a Scrimcloth

microfibers are no better than an old bath towel,they smear almost straight away



i use W5 and rate it as excellent , but only ever use it in cold water  . i add 1 squirt to each bucket then fill with water

hot water/cold water/detergent shouldn't make a difference if technique is right, the sun is getting lower though showing up bad techniques or worn squeegie blades.

Take that back not enough detergent maybe

What are you actually trying to buff? If you have used your squeegee correctly there will be nothing left to buff. Scrim round the edges and done. Don't let a microfibre near the glass, especially if you been using it all morning, they're to unpredictable with the finish.

Thanks for thoughts, probably a combination as I changed rubber after the job, am going to have a look today - suspect the glass that is the problem is some new "self clean".  Had incredible problems yesterday with one self clean window - all the rest on the house/estate were fine.

you need to be careful when cleaning self-cleaning glass with washing up liquid ,  also you should'nt use abrasive cloths such as a micro fibre  cloth. if you damage the coating mate you could end up with a big bill . apparently you should only use approved cleaning agents found on pilkington glass website.     Mike

change to a brand like gg3/squeegee off.it stops the "haze" and white marks that washing up liquids leave behind.i used fairy for years but would never go back now.

things to remember.


never use too much soap in your water

use a good quality rubber

have a good squeegee technique

i use a mixture of gg3/squeegee off.works well and no stickiness.

its ridiculous to suggest microfibres are no good for detailing/buffing up.they are brilliant if you get the flatweave variety rather than the "towelling" ones(although these are good for sill cloths).i use scrim more on damp days as they last longer but they need "breaking in" first when their new.

i agree with dazmond on that i use micro fibre cloths to detail i think theyre great  however cos mine are cheap  i cant use em  too much on the middles of the glass etc cos when dry  they leave bits and kinda smears behind i use squeegee off as it seems to leave less detailing to do and seems ok on sunny days i dont think you should be buffing the windows at all m8 squeegee rubber finish is all u need  ?? im  not sayin im gr8 i occasionally have to go over windows but only for tiny smears as im still getin the hang of fanning!!  im still learning and trying to do a perfect job but you must be doing something really wrong to leave marks that require two call backs???
