I know this is not related to window cleaning but I thought I would ask you guys some advice.

Having spoken to a couple of local window cleaners they have advised that it could take a long time to build up a round that will give you an income to live on so am thinking about other opportunities I could try.

It looks like there is money to me made in helping people move houses or removing and selling junk. Does anybody have any experience in this or have any mates doing it? How do you think the money would compare to window cleaning?

Make sure that you are insured for this.  That the van is insured for this type of work.  That the goods you are moving are insured.

customer who is moving only 3 miles across town told me today of the quotes she just got- £650,£ 800  etc

 good money in it id say ! and they told her it take 3 hours tops  to pack her up and get going

i guess high insurance might be a reason for those prices. they told her they will lay the bed out and the sofa  at the new gaff ,but no unpacking of boxes of course.

Did you not realise this before you started? Did you think you'd get a round straight away, or did it really take other cleaners to tell you?
 Anyway , whatever you wanna choose to do, if you spend time on removals then its less time spent on making a window cleaning round. The choice is simple, and its yours.......make your mind up what you wanna do.

my dad did a bit of removals years ago.i helped him out and did my back in!!never again!!i hated it!!you need a massive van as well.

canvass and leaflet  nearly every day for 6 months and get a bit of work working with a local cleaner if you can.

buy some work if there is any going near you.

concentrate on getting new work every day.its gonna be hard slog but you need to do it and live and breath window cleaning every waking moment at the start.

i wouldnt like to be starting off now.a lot more competition but if you have the tenacity and drive you can build a business for your self but it wont fall in your lap.

nothing worthwhile in life comes easily ive found.hard work all the way!!

I used to work for a removal company for a couple years when i left school and its hard work mate. You need a decent size van, blankets and webbing to tie things up inside your van and most important of all is training to do it properly. Their's a million other things....each to their own but i wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Their's been a program on channel 5 all about pickford removals. Watch that and see what you think.

you would be supprised what comes out of a standard 3 bed council house my mate owns a big removal and storage company i helped him 4 weeks ago we filled the biggest class2 17tonne lorry you can get plus a big luton van from a run of the mill 3 bed it was flippin hard work (but enjoyable) there are alot of insurance involved and licences etc lets face it you would struggle to get much more than a large sofa in a transit nowdays hope that helps john.

Just concentrate on "doing what you do" and don't get distracted. If you spend a whole day canvassing, and I'm talking about a real day not 10 til 2 with a long lunch, you should get a days work for the following day.

So you should be focussed. Once you get a customer they stand about a 50% chance of becoming a regular in my experience. Thats worth more than a one off job taking junk to the dump.
