Premature Winter precautions, static setup
« on: May 22, 2011, 08:13:07 pm »
Im moving house in the next couple of months and i will be having a static setup up in the bottom of the garden.

My question is, Is there any way if insulating the Fill and Drain pipes from the outside tap to the Ro and hose back to the drain so that they dont have to be rolled up each night to prevent freezing?

You could bury them Lee? I am going to do the same thing myself and am looking at the options too.

Hi Lee

A plumber friend of mine recommended a product called Armaflex for lagging the pipes. He reckons its the best. As I have an extension out the back of my garden I had to fit the copper water pipe down the side of the extentsion to the new position for the tap. I covered the copper pipe with armaflex, wrapped it in duck tape and pushed it through a drain pipe from B&Q to keep in wate tight. I did it in Feb this year so havent tested it yet with the freezing weather we've had over the past couple of years. Time will tell.............!

One thing though...My Pa-in-law suggested changing the copper pipe to non mettalic flexipipe. That way, if the water inside freezes it will not split like copper pipe would as there will be more room for flexibility. If I have problems I will do that next year!

I should mention that its expensive. Think I payed about £20- £30 that covered a wall that is about 3m longer. Expensive but if it works it is worth it.
Might be an idea to combine all ideas...
Armaflex, Drain pipe, flexipipe and buried!

Are you really certain about that?  I'd be cautious about calling people stupid with such a grasp of the facts, personally.

700 to 1300 cm is indeed 7 to 13 metres. Perhaps you meant 700 to 1300 mm?

Perhaps you feel stupid now, RO-Sheen?  ;D

Lee why will your waste water be going down the drain when you can water your garden with it i have some old pole hose connect to waste pipe from ro and move around the garden to water plants ,

might be better rolling hoses up mate but if temps are dropping to -8 0r -9 i just keep my ro running but i keep them of the floor and they are covered in minbore pipe wrap
