Brown spots on chinese rug
« on: March 03, 2011, 04:11:10 pm »
Got a chinese wool rug I've cleaned for a customer but have brown marks scattered about on it. So far I have tried my usual spotters incl. de-browner & rust remover on them and nothing. Hoping someone might know what they are or better still how to remove them because the rest of the rug has come up well.
Pic below

Thanks Paul

Could be a number of things, I would get a cotton bud and dip it in a dilution of hot sodium met and apply that way.

Depends what the situation is between you and the customer.
If you've promised her a spotless new looking rug then you might have to do as Shaun as said, on the other hand and personally I always tell people I will do what I can but can't guarentee total removal of everything. Of course if she can tell you EXACTLY what each spot is, how long it's been there and has any attempt been made to remove them then that might help.
Don't forget you've already changed the 'chemistry' of those marks by attempting a clean (although you don't tell the customer that bit).

My betting is on tea or coffee drips.

Mark if you look under the first post and click on the link you can see it, I'd imagine the forum bods have done this to save valuable space.

Thanks for the replies.
Rug was stored and she's had it 30 years, not stored that long I don't think ;D

I think she'll be happy with the clean but just wanted to try and remove so may give Shaun's advice a try tomorrow.

I have found a lot of these type of stains on the thick 100% wool rugs they are all but impossible to remove had one recently where the dog had peed on it and the guy put it in the garage for six months before asking me to clean it  !!!

Shaun's advice is good but I would just check with the customer before doing it, they may be perfectly happy with what you have achieved. Just explain that it's a special process and may lighten the areas you treat.

These chinese rugs are terrible for getting stains out like that, those marks arent soluble so wont wash out.
Only way is as Shaun said reducer or oxidiser with care and no promises.

Thanks again for the comments.

Think they are permanent.
Tried a reducer on 2 of them and it only whitened the surrounding area, see pic attached. Managed to reverse the whiteness with an ammonia spotter, so a little tip for anyone else that experiences the same  ;)
Didn't turn out too bad though, before & after pic attached.  ;D
