8mm or 6mm
« on: January 22, 2011, 06:36:09 am »
talking to a windy last week who i havent seen for a while. he had a nosey in my van and was shocked i was still using minibore . he changed last summer to microbore after 4 years with minibore . he said it was lots easier and lighter and had no problems . so why arent we all using 6mm .  has anyone used both or changed from one to the other for any specific reason . thinking of changing to 6mm now if it makes the job that bit easier

i havnt used minibore, but i have had no problems with my microbore, some have said that they have had pressure problems with the micobore, but i havnt had any and have been very pleased with it.

That's funny, I was thinking of changing to minibore  :)
I find with microbore my pump is always near max regarding pressure and flow.

8mm is supposed to be better for pump wear and pressure.

Maybe the advantage of using 6mm outweighs the disadvantage of having to replace pump more regularly (I have not used 6mm).

i use both, only reason is that i aint got round to buying some more 8mm, the 6mm is definatly harder on the pumps, ok it may be lighter to lift but pumps cost £100 and i dont fancy changing one a year so as soon as i get round to it all my hose will be 8mm

That's the best thing you could do, try his reel on your system.

It's not just pump wear but also the extra power required from the battery with 6mm hose as the pump needs to be run faster & at higher pressure. There will also be more pressure in the whole system because of this. I use 8mm because of these reasons. No doubt, 6mm will be lighter & easier to use maybe.

My question on this is, Why does it affect the pump, if you use 8mm it still ends up being forced through a what? 5mm pole hose of what 30/40/50 foot long, How is this any different?

Because 8mm is 33% bigger I/D than 6mm so less resistance  ;)

The pole is only a short piece and will hardly any effect on the pump as long as the large length is 8 mm

i use 6mm microbore, and have been using the same hose and pump for nearly 4 yrs.
i dont know why people say that more narrow diameter of microbore will knacker your pump, as the water goes through 2 mm jets at the brush  ???

For me it's not about pump wear, they are up to the job to be honest, even a pump per year is no hardship. It's all the other things that go along with it as mentioned earlier.
