Headache setting up 40" RO.
« on: December 12, 2010, 04:45:39 pm »
A bit of a PITA today.  I've been to my lock-up a few miles away to replace my merlin with a 40" RO.  I've had the bits laying around for a while but time or energy have been in short supply.
Anyway, I thought I had all the bits but sod's law struck.
I'm making the change due to being on a water meter these days.  Merlins put out a lot of waste and I discovered that restricting it was messing up the membranes too quickly.
Anyway, a lot of the tubing with the merlin was 3/8" John Guest and after taking advice, I felt that half inch would be better due to the faster production of the 4040 (it's an HF5 due to having lowish pressure there).
Anyway, I got myself a new pre-filter housing as the carbon pre-filter is built into the merlin.  I needed a couple of 3/4 to 1/2 reducer bushes for the pre-filter lid.
Ballsed it up straight away as it cross threaded and is unusable.  So I suppose I will now need a new top part - if they are sold separately.
Then I came to my existing pre-filter housing and discovered that the holes in the top are too small for the half inch JG fittings.  Anyway, I've got enough water for Monday and Tuesday I reckon.  I will be ordering some relevant bits to help me finish it on Wednesday I reckon.  I've set everything up to take it as far as I could.  I've got all sorts of bits and bobs laying around including f8ttings with barbs, O-rings, hoselock stuff and I tried all manner of things to mix and match a working system.  Everything I tried I was either one bit short (of a picnic  ;D ) or it wasn't quite the right size or something else was wrong.  I just gave up in the end and decided to complete it as soon as I get the new bits.  One thing I could really have done with today was a JG half inch to 3/8" reducer - just as a stopgap to get me started.  I seemed to have just about every part known to man but the one I wanted LOL.
At least I can laugh about it.

Hi

If you need some water on Wednesday, let me know.

I may well need to take you up on that. Thanks for the offer Darren..
Knowing the deliveries of the company where I get the bits, it should be Wednesday morning when I can pick them up.  So I may need some water just for Wednesday.  Then I can finish off the RO setup on Wednesday evening to give me a start for Thursday (hopefully)  ;D

I may even have the bits!

Like you I have all sorts of fittings - but never the right ones!

I don't have a static tank, so we will need to fill up from my tank in the van, just let me know 07766 243171

Cheers Lee.
It may be that I might need some for Wednesday.
I have enough for a day in the van.  Just about enough for another day perhaps in the static unit - plus about 150 litres in containers.  I don't have any larger jobs due so it's possible that I may even have enough for Wednesday too as Wednesday will be a late start for me.  A bit hard to tell this far ahead.  It will be clearer on Tuesday.
Thanks for the offers guys.
Much appreciated.

Just to revisit this thread and the continuing saga of PC's 40 incher  ;D .

I managed to find two JG reducers in my box of tricks so as a stopgap, I set them up either side of the pre-filter housing that only took 3/8" fittings.  A bit of a kludge up but it's only until tomorrow when I pick up some new housings.  Wow, those 40 inchers are well fast.
Anyway, the housing where I had cross threaded had a small leak but it was in a largish drip tray so I thought I would risk leaving it on for a few hours while I was out working.  Just as well I did only leave it a few hours because the tray was nearly full when I returned.  It didn't seem possible that such a small leak would fill it up so fast.
The funniest bit though was when I first switched the tap on after connecting up.  As per instructions, I had the waste fully open to start with.  The funny bit was that I heard the water gushing out of somewhere or another.  I had only gone and screwed the waste outlet fitting to the wrong hole at the waste end.  Anyone who has used these will know that at one end you have the outlets for the (almost) pure water and an outlet on the side at the same end for waste.  However, there is another threaded hole that is a blank end but looks the same as the waste outlet.  Oops  !!   I can't believe I did that LOL.
Anyway, I have about 500 in the static tank for tomorrow and about 200 in the van so it looks like I won't need to take up the kind offers of water as I will have my new housings tomorrow morning.
It is seriously messy in that 4m x 3m room I call a unit.  It badly needs a tidy up.  I hate being disorganised but it's only temporary.

It depends which supplier you go to but very roughly you could say that it's £200 for the membrane and another £200 for the housing.  This is the HF5 which is designed to work at a lower water pressure than its cheaper predecessors.  You can get it cheaper than that but that's a rough, ballpark figure.  A number of fittings are needed too that add to the cost.
