Ethics and Quotes
« on: November 26, 2010, 08:59:40 pm »
Today the computer man came around and read the last rights to my main pc, although he's taken it away in the hope of some life saving surgery.

Anyway he was telling me about a national company in the pc repair world who advertise home visit no repair no fee.

If only it was that straight forward. There's no fee provided the guy who comes out actually does some work. In the event that he gives a quote and you decide it's not worth getting it repaired THEN THERE IS A CHARGE.

This is akin to us saying Free quote (provided you take us on) otherwise there's a charge. Has anyone done this ie charged for doing a quote? And I don't mean going out on a site visit on behalf of an insurance company etc

If I had that and they said it was a FREE quote and I didn't like it he would be out the door with no money. Probably a speky geek anyway. ;D
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

I think this is a difficult subject, if all we do is walk in the door look at the carpet and say that will cost £50 then we should not charge.

but a lot of my 'quotes' are more like in-depth consultation where I give a lot of advice. I visited a customer last month who was replacing the L/R carpet but using it on the H/S/L I was there ages helping them work out how to cut it up to be usable. then I cleaned the carpet 2 weeks ago after it was fitted.

while I was there I advised then on underlay and what type of carpet to use in the L/R.

they got a lot of help and expertise for free, an interior designer would have charged for exactly the same thing.

Hi

They would have to explain the charging structure beforehand or you would report them to trading standards surely.

£12.50 a month?
I tried that idea today. Went into PCW said I want that one there on your lease system which had a sticker saying £23/month. Machine was £400
He puts the details in and says that'll be £36/month for 2 years (with all the bits you mentioned Richard.) Apparently it was 'from' £23/month and that was for some tiny notebook somewhere in the building >:(
Now, I didn't have a calculator in my pocket but it didn't take much to work out that this was pushing £850 :o
Perhaps if he'd listened to me questioning this, he wouldn't have wasted 15 minutes inputing all the data before I said "Forget it, I'll just buy it outright."
