Anyone come across this type of floor covering ?
« on: November 20, 2010, 01:47:30 pm »
Had to go and clean up after a painter spilt a whole tray of paint on a tenants landing, bloke is an idiot for not using dust sheets.
Try and describe it,it`s almost like a carpet backing, without the pile, very coarse, almost like a Hessian type stuff,i used over 10 ltrs trying to get it up,even tried lifting it up to extract from behind, but it was glued to the underlay.
There was a huge water mark surrounding it,which i think is going to be permanent.
Could i have done anything else ?
Just told him he will have to replace it

I have an idea, what fibre was the carpet out of interest?

Sisal, Seagrass, Coir, Jute - all Crucial Trading stuff. Stuck to underlay, underlay stuck to floor.

I did tell the guy that it was more than likely water sensitive, did a burn test, pale grey ish ash, yellow flame, have just told him it`s a replacement,he is going to have trouble finding it i think.
I did extract the rest of the landing,so as not to leave a clean patch, and that dried in front of my eyes, without any issue, was only 8x4 so it shouldn`t cost him too much, they did change the downstairs room, which was the same, prior tenant defrosted freezer, and it leaked all over it,and left another huge mark.
Underlay was not stuck to floor, just the backing of the covering.

It wasn't installed correctly then Mark and shrinkage could be an issue, although being stuck to the underlay does give it some dimensional stability.

Just had a look on the Crucial site, not really that easy to find it,it looked like the carpet had been laid upside down,is the best way to describe it,think it`s going to cost him, just as well he is insured

Yep as I suspected sisal. They will catch a lot of CC out becuase of it's structure and also it can sometimes be a blend. Personaly I would have walked and told them to call their insureres and by a proper carpet with the procedes.

Didn`t notice any shrinkage, even on the area that was still wet from where he tried with a wet vac yesterday,he was tipping water on it and sucking it up !!

They don`t own it,the house is rented, the agency got the painter in to touch up the stairs,he is notorious for not using dust sheets, this time he got caught out,i won`t accept any responsibility,as far as i was concerned, the carpet was a write off,so it`s his problem not mine

Mark

Yes it was a lost cause although if it had shrunk they could have made it your problem. It didn't shrink because as steve said they are often stuck down.

It can be expensive too as is sold in a lot of poncey places to the more money than sense Harbouside apartment types.

If it's spitting with rain outside sisal will shrink!
