insulate the pipes with lagging  or proper insulation piping,    if possible run system empty,  put a thick blanket over everything,

u cant leave a gas heater in a van a night,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-HEATER-12V-200W-CARAVAN-TENT-CAMPERVAN-FAN-PLUGIN-/330491680710?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cf2d6d7c6#ht_2553wt_1139

how about this run off of a transformer of spare leisure battery

will be too small

if it is that cold that everything freezes then it is too cold to work, it is that simple,  unless u can stick ur van in a garage or run a electic heater all night then  u have to insulate ur vans roof  to help keep the cold out, as most roofs are bare metal the heat just leaves

power inverter? with oil filled heater would need another battery. probably have to charge it every day but my mate has a power inverter in his van and he charges all his drills ect from it even uses it to run the odd power tool.

ok insulate the roof with about 4 boards (£12)

as well as a heater, i did think about the camping heater, but they take those small bottles, and i would guess they would last about 2hrs?

my choice would last days?

i was going to drain my system too (pain in the butt btw) helps by doing it when packing up on last job.

last 3 winters it was just 2 rolls of loft insulation wrapped around the merlin and the reels, but the plastic/foil bags eventually rip leaving the insulation wet.
