Jamie

its all about supply and demand. for example if your sitting on your butt doing nothing your prices would reflect this. also if your where really busy then you need to put your prices up.

The catch in all this is what you want to invest in the first place. This is then refereed to as "return on investment" or ROI.

So, you invest say £500 in a month depending on how good your marketing is will depend on what you get back. also the type of customer you attract. you also have to add in your running costs, wages then you have your profit. it helps to run things this way as you can get stuck as just self-employed and never get any working for you. if thats your aim then thats ok.

it can help to work backwards by adding up your running cost and marketing the what you want to earn each hour to get what you should be charging. thats if you dont have any data to go on.

Also having different types of packages will help not leave any money on the table as they say. by offering this the customer is able to pick from say three different service levels that will meet their budget.

You should also know what others are charging in your area. this does no mean you will need to be lower just that you can sell the value in your service. for example we offer free spillage callout with our service, this will stand us apart from others in our area. it might be that you offer stain protection included within your price.

so your question can only be answered by yourself.

PS. One other thing Jamie you will learn about carpet cleaners they will always tell you about the best customer and prices NOT what the average customer or price is

I have very similar pricing to Mike on 'typical' 3 bed semi dimensions except HSL where I'm slightly cheaper. If it's just one bedroom then defo 45-50 but additional rooms then cheaper.

It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

I charge £2 for first room and £1 for rooms after that, I think I'm the cheapest in the area.

Well Alan Sugar said it tonight so it must be true. Any idiot can sell something is the price is low enough. It takes a good salesman to get a sale at a decent price.

If you disagree tell Sir Alan, not me.

My prices kind of depend on how many rooms the customer wants cleaned. If they only want one room done I will try and charge a higher rate, but even then the most I have ever charged for a living room was £50.

If they want several done I will offer a pretty good discount.

Pricing always leads to a healthy debate. There is no right or wrong way of doing it. As a new business I charge what I need to charge in order to make sure I turn every enquiry into a job. If that means going in really cheap sometimes I will do it and I've done a whole 3 bed house for £100 on several occasions. When I get more enquiries and am in a position to miss out on jobs here and there I will hold out for higher prices.

At the end of the day your prices are specific to your business and what you need to keep yourself ticking over.

I do 3 bed semis with no dining room for £95.
A lot of 3 bed semis round here are really 2 bed
and a box room small landing and hall.
3 hours arrive to depart.

John,

Sounds about the same as my pricing structure.

The way I see it, I can do a 3 bed semi in 3 hours, so £100 for 3 hours work is a pretty good return in my opinion. If I could do one 3 bed and a smaller job most days I would be more than happy with that.

Just out of interest, how often do you get jobs for a whole house? I find those jobs very few and far between at the moment.

Back in the 1980s Alan Sugar tried to buy my Step Dad's electronics/software company for a very tidy sum of money.

Unfortunately he turned it down to try and go it alone and ended up almost going bankrupt. Pillock!

Did one a couple of weeks back but before that?
Did a big one this afternoon, machine in their garage
then 3 flights of stairs to attic bedroom, stairs down
to landing and 2 bedrooms, stairs down to landing
and living room and stairs down to ground floor.
75 foot just about did it.
