40 foot plus.......
« on: November 01, 2010, 06:53:17 pm »
I'd only previously been as high as using a 30 foot pole. Took on three jobs requiring higher so i lent a Brodex 50 odd foot off my mate to do them. Carbon fibre, seems the base section is fibre glass and i reckon the sections are 7 foot. How as you supposed to extend the thing ? I'm 6 foot and had to get on a step ladder to pull the sections up, laying it out flat and lifting it was not an option as we where cleaning old victorian properties sorrounded by trees. I'm more than every convinced that modular carbon fibre is the way to go higher. Anyone else have difficulty with these big poles?

Gardiners SMAX is very short closed, can extend it all the way no problems at all. It is the max I would want to go telescopic, as its fairly flexy and light enough for short runs, but not hours on end at height.

A modular is clearly the way forward for long runs of commercial work.

Modular poles are the way to go but bet some Ladder monkey will put a post saying how much easier it is to climb a 40 ft ladder and clean a window then climb down the ladder move it to next window and repeat. :P

Yeah, i understand that. How do you walk them up the wall when you're surrounded by trees and the clamps are over seven foot high. How do you pull the sections out? Step ladder like me while someone else holds the pole or am i missing something?

If you are on a step ladder pulling the sections out.... pull one out , lean it on the wall, pull another out ... lean it on the wall... and so on , until you are at the height you  need,

no ?  ???

Walk up wall=

Extend on ground, put butt up to BASE of the building wall. Lift pole up near brush end and start to walk towards the butt end liftting the pole as you go untill it's up against the wall it wass butted up to.

To be honest, these poles arn't up to the job, way too heavy, thick & bendy, can verge on being dangerous IMO.

Modular's are a doddle & are the only realistic option for 40ft+ IMO.

Thats what i done. You need two hands though to extend the sections. Might as well go all the way up a ladder, it seems bizzare to have to get a ladder out to save going up ladders. I'll take a pic of the thing tomorrow, its an absolute joke.
Here we go, from brodex website, collapsed length
45ft only 8’
57ft only 9’4

Facelift poles are 6'

Maybe its me, but just how you're supposed to extend a telescopic which has a collapsed length of six foot is beyond me. I'd love to see a demo of how its meant to be done.

You're right, they are a joke. How would you feel if you'd just payed good money for one on the confidence that the supplier knew their stuff? ;D

If i'd of paid a grand for that thing i've just used i would be gutted !! I was already exploring the fishing pole route for  my own taller pole as i couldnt justify spending that amount of money on one for occasional use. Its taken another slant now though, you can't operate the things even after paying a tidy sum for a 'purpose built' one.
On the bright side ,after using this contraption i was able to throw my 30 foot fibreglass around with one hand. Well for half an hour anyway !!!

Thanks Ste, but i been getting a few more this size so could do with having one myself really. I'll tell you where i was, them avenues off Ullet Road, them large houses surrounded by trees and walls. Laying it out was not an option, i found it funny going up a ladder to extend it !!!

go for a fishing pole if buy two gangsta poles you can get up to about 50 foot on the second pole i put electrical tape round about a foot down from the top of each section and then put the two 4a together then the 5a 6a 7a it gets a bit whippy but for 150 pound i can live with that

it may be handy though so you can gauge as to what sort of closed height your after mate, i find the s-max a piece of p1ss to put up mate. Ullet av is not somewhere you want to leave anything on the floor though, the kids would be off with it and have it sold in no time haha, how did your mate get on with that work that you called me about?

Extend 30ft whilst on ground and walk up wall or kerb leaving 2 sections to extend when vertical, carbon pole wont snap unless you extend each section out to the max possible. :)
