VAT on carriage?
« on: October 13, 2010, 09:00:26 pm »
When purchasing goods from a particular supplier I have noticed that they have charged VAT on the cost of the goods plus carriage and packaging. Is this right? I was under the impression that VAT should only be charged on the cost of the goods.

if you look at this site you can see all prices are plus VAT.

so I would think vat is applicable on carriage if the supplier uses a delivery company

It's irrelevant as to whether your supplier uses a delivery company.   If your supplier is VAT registered and even if they used a delivery company which wasn't - they would still have to charge you VAT on the delivery element

Once you are vat registered you have to charge vat on all goods and services unless the items are vat exempt. Vat exemption is now restricted to very few items, books and childrens clothes are the main ones I think.

Yes. I understand the Insurance industry is looking at this because at present they can't claim the vat back on all the repairs and goods replacements they carry out.

Why do you think I insist in wearing size 5 sandals? so my size 9 feet fit into them! trousers are a bit of a challenge but am working on it.
