Ideas to make my hose reel swivell.?
« on: September 12, 2010, 10:05:02 am »
Hi,

I have my metal reel bolted to my van floor at the rear doors,

i am just looking at ideas to make it swivell, as the hose sometimes gets trapped on the reel at tight angles,

i am going to use two peices of mdf, with a bolt through the centre of both,..the bottom piece will be fixed securely to the van floor, and the top piece will be free to spin, with a couple of large washers seperating the two pieces.,

Then i will screw the reel to the top piece and it should spin,

Has anyone else done something similar?

Any more ideas welcome please.

Thanks.

yeah, use ply, much better and varnish it
but its a good idea and should work, put a skateboard bearing between the two washers also.

My reel is bolted to a piece of wood running over the top of my tank (I've insulated it with ply, space blanket and polystyrene foam.)

The reel is as far back as possible but just letting the van doors shut.

I then have a piece of 4 x 2 by about half a metre long running right in the middle of the hose reel but underneath and protruding to the farthest point that lets the doors shut.

I then have a 4" door hinge screwed into the end of this 4 x 2 with another piece of 4 x 2 about 18" long hanging down. This has a 4" screw in each side at the extremity wrapped with gaffer tape.

If I have an angle that is sharp for the hose I put the hose under one of the screws and pull it out so that it forms an angle that takes the hose beyond the hose reel edges and beyond the door hinges of the van.

When the hose is reeled in the 18" piece of 4 x 2 that is hinged drops down to let me shut the doors.

About a year ago I had a 3 x 1 hinge but it broke after about 9 months. I have just replaced it with the 4" hinge because it is so useful at acute angles.
It's a game of three halves!
