silly prices
« on: August 24, 2010, 06:12:25 pm »

  Hi All

I dont normally talk prices on the forums but thought i had to tell you this one.

I looked at a large block of offices converted from a row of older buildings 240 windows, all large georgian  sash with deep sills, probably one of  the worst combinations for wfp.

some of this was 40 feet up as its four storey.

Then he added in some roof lights. Then another 50 windows internal plus doorways.

He also was complaining about the standard of the current people. Iam not supprised as it turns out

I thought its going to end up a day for one of our two man teams. Maybe send a young lad to help with hoses as well as the insides. Maybe even a bit more if things go wrong as he was after a good clean needed to rinse well. so maybe a tank refill which would be 40 mins out for the driver.

This stacked up as thats exactly what the current guys where doing.

I quoted 500 knowing he would chip me down, I really wanted 400.  guess what they where doing it for?

240.00 quid !!!  I think thats ridiculous. Three guys a van wfp two pole system water fuel  for 240 a day+.

what do you think?

cheers

john

agree it seems cheap think i like i would have wanted 400 as no doubt it will be hard work and theres a good chance of recall if you dont get the rinse right on the sash windows and i would have thought 2/3 days work for one man - certainly at my current speed tho i gues they be someone who can do it in half n hour with one arm behind thier back whilst the others holding the sports page of the newspaper - whilst holding the wfp between thier teeth and while some beauticians manicuring thier feet lol  :P

an optimist takes the tartare sauce with him when he goes fishing -

Overheads = 3 guys working onsite, fuel, water etc...

So it could work out about £100 profit...

So, are we saying here that £140 will cover the wages for 3 guys, insurance, N.I, vehicle running costs, depreciation,  water production, staff holidays, sick ?

No - Figures are based on if John got the job for £400.  ;)

There isn't alot of running cost of a van in one place all day, NI, Insurance and water costs for one day are also negligible, and as for depreciation, a van doesn't depreciate much in a day.

If a bloke has 3 men earning him 100 profit a day and working a bit himself he would soon be making a decent amount of money.

My guess would be the blokes are on a bit of cash and no NI and tax to pay, then you are making a ton easily.

 hi

I cost on 80 a day for the blokes and 60 for the youngster, and 50 for the van, thats 270 so 400 will give 100 after other costs(office and advertising insurance).

I know these figures are high but i pay well to keep employees happy. my main guys are family men who are grafters and experienced so they deserve good money.

100 would be fine, but to do it for 240 would be an effective loss.

so no i didnt get the job, i offered 400 and left it with him, shame because the guy was just the property manager and got on alright with him. he could see it was about right but not his decision.

what made us laugh is we did a job on the way back, shop front for atenner took us 5 mins  i thought if you had a street of these you could do 400 a day easy on groundwork.

cheers

john

You are not surprised, and no really good WC'ing would be, but this is a regular occurence, a less than good business quotes low, the customer goes for it, then complains because the standard is bad ???
What you want to say is "what did you expect" Trouble is when the good WC'ers get called in and put across a "proper" price, the custie thinks too expensive and forgets all about the bad job done before. >:(
Had one recently,
"i'm not happy with the standard they give"
"here's our price"
Pick up off the floor after mouth to mouth ;D
"But's that £150.00 more than I'm paying now"
"To get the standard you require blah de blah blah de blah"
"But I want to pay the same as I am now"
Then you'll have to continue with those who do a bad job (wanted to say that, but obvioulsy didn't) so just withdrew our quote and said if they need us in the future, please feel free to contact us. :)

If thats the case fair enough.

As for half the other comments on this topic I'd love to see your setups and how your businesses are run   :-\

£5 PH for a18 -20 year old, £6 PH for over 21. Wage bill for the day £88.(based on a 8 hour day).

Well, those are illegal rates you are quoting for starters.

Also once you have added those individuals holiday pay, bank holiday pay, N.I, sick, time out for various unenvisaged reasons (breakdowns etc) then you hourly rate is far far higher than what you have quoted.

no they are not its £3.57 for 16 to 17 years old then 4.85 from 18 to 20 year olds, and when they turn 21 the national min wage for adults kicks in.( I will find that in a minute)

however I agree with the original poster on pricing as even if you do employ young they will get older at some point and you are left with an under priced job
