u buy the name and then own it for 2 years, where u have to buy it again,  but depending on who u buy it from can reregister it for you so you dont lose it

you dont have to start a web site

That's just the way it works.

You pay for it for a fixed period which is normally 2 years and then if you want to keep it you just renew it. You don't have to use it on a website. You won't be ablt to buy it "for life" It's dead easy with no messing about at all really. You will be offered the renewal so that providing you pay the fee again it will remain yours.

You need web hosting for e mail accounts just having a domain name won't give you that

Depends on the hosting provider but most give you at least 10

getting the drift how many emails

You can have as many email addresses as you wish from one domain.  They may all go to one inbox but you can filter them into separate boxes in your email software if you use something like Outlook Express or Outlook.  This may even be possible on a web mail platform too.  It's just that the filtering has to be set up  by you rather than automatically going into different boxes.

Yopu cannot buy it out right as nominet will not allow this. once you register it, it can be on auto renew as long as you have the funds available then the name will be registered again, worst case you forget to renew you can still get the name but will have to have the domain re tagged nominet charge £80 (or did last time I did it for someone)
