I placed a series of ads in the local newspaper - doing a 6 week run to see what the results are.

Second week of the run just gone and I noticed a refund paid to my bank account by the newspaper - thats strange I thought.

Phoned the sales girl that I deal with at the newspaper to ask whats going on.............Oh yes she says we had a call from your business partner to cancel the ad as he said you are going in hospital and didnt want it running so weve given a refund as you paid for a month up front.Business partner I said!!!!! Ive only been going 4 months.I dont have a partner.

I cant believe this has happened,obviously another of the 2 CC's who also advertise in the paper has done this as they must see me as a threat.I have now set up a password for the account.

This also co-insides with several spurious phone calls with witheld numbers  Ive had asking me to go to certain addresses to clean carpets without first asking about quotes or prices.I haven't fallen for anything yet but I think someone wants to send me on a wild goose chase.I begining to get paraniod about every call now!!

i can honestly say, ive never travelled to a job without a contact telephone number.
if i was you wayne, if you get a withheld number offering you a job, get the contact number and call it back before going. just to be sure.

Hi wayne what papr do you advertise in bury times ect?

You will get competetors asking about prices on the phone think after time wayne you will be busy enough to sus the good work out from the bad..

Derek is right on his post mate and also if they have not askd about a price.

Once your established you wont have to go in the paper as its mostly the cheapo guys,take a look at the stockport advertiser wayne n look at the prices ie 17 pound for a carpet and 35 for a suite

There are some low lifes in this industry, and clearly not very bright because there can't be many carpet cleaners advertising in the same paper surely (so that should narrow down who's doing it).
We've been getting a few e-mail enquiries just lately asking for a price on x,y,z
So we send an e-mail back within minutes asking for location and contact number.....strangely they don't come back to that basic couple of questions, now i wonder why that might be

Yes Clinton,its the Bury Times,2 other CC's in there.One says Half Price Cleaning and then also offers free stain guard!!! There has to be a catch there then.The other offers a 12x14 carpet for £15!!!!

First week not a sausage from the ad,second week 2jobs from it and 2 other enquiies.

I always take a contact number just in case i am running late, but never had a problem like this thank god, any one of us could make life awkward for other local guys if we were that way inclined, sabotage the opposition how pathetic if you could afford it put an add even bigger in next time that will p... them off.

You're a threat to the 'status quo' and you will be taking their market share, you deal with it by keeping to your rates and competing on quality. As has been said we could all be bloody minded but it is just silly. Visit customers to do quotes if you can, sign your vehicle. The more you name is out there the more it will work. I'd put a nice printed post card or leaflet with a special offer in there in the next couple of weeks. They won't like it up 'em

Be flattered but keep ur wits about you -  in all biz there will always be numptys who want to dwell on the negative competition & damn u over!!  be assured that there is room enough for every level of cleaning contractor,  not just the low lifes ...
