on the spot pricing

Do you price you jobs you survey immeadiatly or do you work out and forward ? I always give a price staight away for domestic, which i assume is the norm for most c/c , and I forward a quote for commercial after i have surveyed. 
Today, I won a job for a commercial by giving a price straight away, it was for a number of rooms at a hotel and as I pulled into the car park a c/d van pulled next to me at exactly the same time, had a quick chat and we both carried out our survey, after working out the areas etc the manager asked if I could give an immediate quote, no problem I said .
Straight away, the jobs yours when can you fit it in?   :) he didnt even want to wait for the c/d quote.

But it did make me wonder if a price straight away may just nudge the job in your favour :-\

Similar to you Geoff, domestic on the spot, commercial usually email same evening.

You having the ear of the person making the decision was obviously an advantage.
Couple weeks ago I did a quote for a small commercial (couple hundred quid type of thing) and the guy showing me the job (the H&S manager) told me the decision would be made by the top man, so no matter what the price and even if I gave it there and then would have made no difference.

Well done anyway, be interesting why he didnt wait for the CD quote.

Joe , the c/d guy during our conversation did say I,m just here to look at the job and the price will be decided by the office .

Actually, it was just over 12 months ago that I went to quote for a letting agent who had a office on site of a large complex of town centre flats here in Warrington.
He showed me 3 different style of flats he wanted cleaning, said there would be more to come, and asked could I give him a price there and then which I did. I got the job, but he said CD wouldnt/couldnt give him a price there and then, would have to send it.

I did work for them for about 5 weeks, always getting told what a wonderful job, then one day I did a flat, manager and his sidekick looked at it just as I was finishing, give me the thumbs up, and off they went.
I packed up, went to the office for my money, manager not in but the lady had my money - £40, substantially less then the agreed amount.
I said thats not my payment, I dont do jobs for £40, rather embarrassed she told me thats all he left.
I didnt take the money but left the invoice unsigned (not received payment).
It took a couple of phone calls to get the money posted by hand thro my door.
Not been asked back since - presume he got someone a lot cheaper (maybe CD).

Same here geoff..

I usually give the commercial jobs a price straight away as i say am a one man band etc rather than send a quote on line or in the post.

Also domestics i give the price straight away..

Surveyed a commercial today, no way could I have priced it on the spot.
Doing a demo on Wed, gives me a chance to build a relationship, look at it again more casually
and satisfy both party's that I can meet their expectations.

Domestics on the spot. Most commercial work has come via personal recomendation so they already know me and will wait for quotation. That also gives me the chance to suggest a maintenance plan option.
