Maxx 450 rpm controller
« on: April 03, 2010, 12:22:51 pm »
I seem to have a problem with the idle/low/high switch on th front panel.

If you take off the side cover so you can see the Governor that that switch operates. There are two stops. One at the low end of the rev range and one at the high. At last my question. When the switch is on the high setting, should the Governor move until it hits the stop or would it normally be some way short of it. The reason I ask is I ran it for 30 mins or so yesterday and it wouldn't maintain a more than about 180 degrees on the gauge at 300 psi through two .2 jets. The only explanation I could think of is that the revs were some way short of flat out. The governor arm was a good cm or so away from the stop. Any ideas Nevil

The governer are will rarely be at it's fullest extent, it varies it's position depending on what load the engines under.
Idle no load speed should be around 1500 rpm, economy position is 2650 and high being 3000 rpm the later two maintaining no matter what load it's under.
Does this help ?.

Thanks Glynn. I reckon it must be stuck on economy. The Governor is only traveling what looks like half of it's range. I will have to figure out a way to check the rpm to be sure. Do you happen to know what the switch does. Not sure if the governor is driven by a servo or another type of linear actuator. If it's a servo, from memory they need to be pulsed to move so I can't see a switch providing that. Which would mean something else must be in there which could be at fault. I think I may fit a cable.

A cable is no use to you here nevil as there isn't any mechanical governer.
If you look directly behind the electric panel ( or in front of radiator ) you will see an ECU bolted to the metal panel, this is the speed controller. It has a red led light on the side of it and this lights up when operation is normal. There in a lead coming from this to a multiplug connector near the left side panel cover, make sure this is plugged together properly. Also I think there is an engine speed fuse in the fuse panel so check this.

Thanks Glynn. I'll check those things and probably come back with some more questions if it's ok with you.
