Those of you who have tried these avenues - what have you put and how well did it work?
It's a game of three halves!

I use a local book that goes around a big estate - its a charity run company and makes no profit with all staff just helping out for no pay.

i wouldnt have bothered but i do the windows for the people that run it and they kept on at me to stick an ad in, so i went for 3 months just to see. costs £51 for 3 months and is sent out to over 9000 houses per month.

it def pays for itself, even picked up a B&Q store from it, i was finding that the book would end up in doctors waiting tables and even the hospital. so even getting work away from that area.

its just a simple ad - company name, then a simple question: need a window cleaner? & con roof going green?
then just my contact numbers.

get alot of idiots - really late at night calls - can you come and clean one window for me? or i live in a mid terrace house so can you come after 6 on a friday so i can let you through the house to the back.

but the good work outways the idiots.

give it a go mate - all areas get some form of a local mag but some dont look at it and then some take it like the bible and think ever company ad is the best company to use as the feel its like a recommendation sort of thing.

We get quite a bit of work from shop notice boards and local mags. Cost is minimal and is covered easily. We only use it for carpet cleaning at the moment as window cleaning is just about at full tilt. Like to have the odd day off and have spare days to get carpet and appointment jobs done. Facebook is great for getting work too. Just have to know where to place ads.

No good for you though Malc even the Samaritans ignore you  :D

I built my round mostly on advertising in a parish magazine. It has only cost me £10 per year.
The people who get this around my way are usually the community minded types who network, prefer using local servies when they can and are usually mortgage free, or not far off.
I approached another parish magazine who told me had a circulation of around 600, but they wanted £60 each time.  :o
As long as the price is right, it is a good place to have a permanent advert.
