First commercial job advice
« on: March 11, 2010, 10:04:54 pm »
I picked up my first commercial job today from walking around B&Q in my "window cleaner, please ask for a quote" hoody!!
Its a hairdressers with 2 big window roughly 8-10'x4-5' insides and out,and four full length mirrors to do.I am going to use pure water in a spray bottle on mirrors and on insides then buff with microfibre,do you think this will be ok on such a large area.I really am not very good or confident of doing a good job with trad gear, any tips or advice of best way to do this,Is my way ok,any advice gratefully recieved.

i could be wrong but to spray pure on large plates and buff up sounds a nightmare and would take ages, i would learn trad quick it only takes practice and lots of it

the large panes will take too long

get your trad kit out and sqeegee, then jsut use a micro cloth to go over it all and mop up any bits you have missed

theres bound to be some greasey "fug" covering the insides  ,same as there is in every house ,so  after soaping it up good, id just do straight horizontal pulls if you decide not to try fanning it - then buff of any line streaks youve left behind with a  dry cloth

im sure you will be alrite

big plates are the easiest to trad. just straight pull and only fan at the end of the pull then do the same again until you get to the bottom. then tidy up with micro/scrim, they may even think your a fab w/c because you spend a few minutes tidying all you mistakes ;D and the last w/c didnt ;)

indeed

just soap it up really well, then soap it up a little more

if you cannot sqeegee, then buy the widest you can

dry the top edge with a cloth, then start at the top and pull the sqeegee down to the bottom, then move over and do the same again

A tip for Chopsy my wife and myself owned 4 hairdressing salons for 27 years and a good tip for hairdressing mirrors. A salon uses lot of hairspray, which call gum trechigan lacquered This will only dissolve with a solvent so here it come mix mentholated sprits with you pure water 75 % water and 25% meths and use a micro fibre to lean the mirrors use one micro to clean and one to buff . 8) 8) :D

You'll probably have to do the insides as well. You'd better get practising with the squeegee.

Actually, large panes are MUCH easier than smaller ones, so it's not too bad.
Yes, Get on youtube and look for videos showing you how to use a squeegee - and get practising.

One of the best for a beginner (IMHO) is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlOfH-iF3Xg

And there's this one, but it's crap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edWbys20Cdw&feature=related

Well done on getting that job....but this just shows that to start a wc business you should be able to use all methods available in order to complete work to the required standard.
I personally cant see the point in trying/hopeing to get commercial work when you haven't got a clue how to work a mop and squegee.
As i say well done, and onwards and upwards, but this should be a warning for all the newbies who believe they can just SPLASH & DASH.

Thanks for all the replies,Yes wally I am doing the insides.Wizard thanks for that top tip,I will get some meths.
Actualcleaning, I had no intention of doing any commercial,or doing insides,This job came to me, I nearly turned it down,But thought sod it,I will bite the bullet and give it a go.Like i say i was just in B&Q and was asked by another customer in there. Picked up a conny roof from one of the bank staff the other day too, having "window cleaner please ask for a quote" has picked me up quite a few jobs since January, the hairdressers alone is £520 a years worth, £60 conny roof, plus a few others,All from a £20 hoody!!! Also the people who own the hairdressers own half a dozen (at least) other businesses there so could be getting a lot more from it!
