Gave a quote today for a customer that runs a small office cleaning company he wants someone to provide periodic cleaning for his customers, he has asked me to clean his carpets at home so i want to do a really good job as im hoping to get regular work from it, what i am usure about are the best products to use the carpets are thick woven pile and they are  pure white its a beautiful home hardly a mark on them but some traffic lane dirt, now i thought they were polyprop which would have been easy ultrapac renovate and crystal green are what i have used in the past and got great results, but this one is not a polyprop, did a burn test, yellow flame, melted to hard brown ball, i think it is a Nylon but part of the burnt piece left a charcoal type mark on my finger so i suspect some wool but most of it just melted i thought that carpets that were a wool mix were mostly wool like the 80/20 types you always see.
anyway i am a little unsure i want to use something like ultrapac because you get great results with it but on wool  even if it not all wool? other chemicals i have are the prochem natural range but not to impressed with them did a white pure wool rug with it, absolute rubbish , ended up re doing it with multi pro and f and f rinse very good result, Also have Ultimate master but again dont think its as good pure white carpets really seem to show which chemicals are best or is it just me?

You can usually tell by the smell when you burn it.

Try Prochem Prespray Gold and rinse with Prochem Liquid Woolsafe or Prochem F&F.Also a favourite of mine as a pre spray is Powerburst,but make sure you rinse with F&F.

Thats what confused me  ???the burn test told me Nylon (burnt celery) brown hard ball according to NCCA manual but it definately had a little black ash only a little though

Chemspec's Enz-all pre spray is the shizzle cant go wrong. Try that.

James, you'll get a different answer from everyone about products.  It's a very personal thing!

Don't get too wrapped up in trying to be a scientist, you'll spend longer burning the carpet than cleaning it :

i can remember several topics in recent months like "what's your top 3 pre sprays", have a scan through those for names/brands.  Don't be afraid of the ultimate master it's very good stuff.

If it's a bit dirty, hit it with something strong!  My favourite approach with a porty used to be m-power or heavy duty microsplitter (sometimes both, apply the HD over the bad bits after the MP has dwelled a while), a THOROUGH SCRUB and then a good old rinse out with UM.  I used to use the UM below the standard dilution rate for that purpose, because you've already done half the work with the pre-spray. (tip: carry two 'clean' buckets, fill with hot water and fully dissolve the UM in these before adding to machine, i use a big metal spoon to stir with, normally takes 5 mins until the white stuff all dissolves and it goes CLEAR.  this helps stop it screwing your pump too quickly)

As long as you flush thoroughly, the UM (allegedly) self-neutralises so you shouldn't have to worry about pH if there's wool present.

Sounds like you've done things the proper way and got a good grounding in how not to screw it up... get stuck in, you'd have to really ignore the "rules" to ruin a carpet, just plug away and find what works best for you

I find one step to a be pretty good allround "safe" product, and you can adjust the concentration.

 I like ultimate master never used it with any other product though just followed the instructions, unfotunately i did a white wool loop pile berber with it and had to re do it as i was not happy with the results, and again this week same carpet but light brown it was a pig so i have lost a little confidence in it as i suppose you do, did another today went strait in with multi pro and rinsed with f an f rinse good result its just finding stuff that consistent if it poly then i go in with ultrapac and crystal green especially if its white as i find that gives brilliant results, although i still like powerburst and crystal green another great product but i am still experimenting, and i always pretest everything just in case but i do wonder what  am i waiting for will it go green ,pink will i  even know you are told adverse reaction

You seem unsure of the content of the carpet, maybe some wool ? not very dirty? Forget throwing a nuclear bomb in there , stay safe, go for neutral or I would recommmend micro splitter or DFC 105.

If it melts to a ball do a float test.

Definately not polyprop, it sank but melted to a  dark brown ball,ball but a tiny amount was ash thats what confused me as i though mostly nylon with some wool just not come across that before its just i thought the bog standard 80/20 meant 80%wool the rest manmade is that incorrect as most of this i think was nylon! not that it matters that much i will probably clean with prespray gold which according to prochem is woolsafe and "designed for nylon too" which surprised me and then rinse with fibresafe gold never tried these two products but were recommended by a guy i know from prochem for this particular carpet said it was good on nylon did any of you know this as i though it was purely for wool.

By nylon they mean it wont have a detrimental effect on the stain protection that is applied during manufacture , either fluoro protect or dye site blockers.
