self employment and 2nd job
« on: January 21, 2010, 12:11:05 pm »
Here is a quick query! Im just not getting enough work at the minute, so im thinking of getting a 2nd job to top up the income.

My question is about me being registered as self employed - what would be the deal then with being employed by someone else? what would the tax be like?

if the job you are going for is PAYE then you will pay tax and ni as normal  u then have to declare this and all self employemnt on your tax return and let the tax man tell you what you owe them.

if it is self employment, just carry on as normal

even if you get a PAYE job, you have to tell the NI that you are no longer self employed or you will receive 2 bill for ni contributions, one whilst working and one whilst self employed, and they want payment for both,  i know this as i got a bill yesterday for my self employment ni   for a period that i was employed phone them and told them and got told that because i never told them, i still had to pay it as they classed me as self employed

i would get a job and do the windows on the side

If the second job is on an employed basis you'll get stopped ni if you earn more than £110 per week  and you'll pay tax at emergency rate of 25%, which you'll put on self assesment form and an adjustment will be made if you owe them or you may get a refund.
The self assesment form has a box for employed earnings.

if you are earning less than the 5000 or so self employed you can ask the tax man for an excemption certificate as you do not need to pay it twice.

i have a full time job earning over 25k and just starting up self employed,it doesnt matter aslong as you put on your tax return your paye earnings aswell as your self employed earnings, its only when you earn too much and your tax bracket jumps up you have to worry!

this ok if you are employed going self employed   its when you are self employed going employed, that it get complicated,

if you want to remain self emplyed  can you not sub contract to the emoployer and just invoice them for work done
