What causes Al Gee (algae) to form in tanks? Is it light? If so, how does this happen inside a dark van even with plastic tank?

Photosynthesis causes the algae to turn green, put your water in a lightproof IBC or container.

Or pour some special solution in there once in a while. I've used Isopropyl alcohol sucessfully in the past. Leave a little bit of water in the tank, like 75l so it sloshes about nicely, add a litre of IPA, and it should be gone quite quickly. I don't think the algae likes it very much.
