How did you employ your first guy?
« on: November 22, 2009, 07:28:07 pm »
Did you take the jump and the pay cut and employ a full timer ,

or help ease the burden with a part timer?

is it better to employ a couple of part timers as things progress?

what are your thoughts and experiences on this ?

Cheers.

When I used to do City Council contracts, I employed part timers only. Different employment laws and costs here but it was worth it. Was doing hospitals and schools mostly. window after bloody window :( Old experienced guys who were good for about 5 or 6 hours mostly, after that you start to get sloppy and make mistakes on the glass and H&S.

A certain amount of stress involved because of deadlines and access, but if you are keen and ambitious, then OK for those guys that are looking to build a good biz.

For Dom work, we try to do everything ourselves, (me and Mrs Cozy) as we have built our dom work on personal contact and wouldn't trust any Germans with it. Long story that.

If we employ someone full time here, it's a bloody trap. Full sick pay from day 1, holliday pay, Christmas bonus etc etc.

I can't see a problem with part time employing in the UK from what I've seen from the guys on here.

i went for a chat with business gateway for a chat, and they set me up with a contact with local council, so basically i got a lad for free for 3 months as the council paid his wages. now i pay his wages but claim it back this has been granted for 8 weeks, then 4 weeks i can claim back 50% then the last 4 weeks i can claim 25% so far its working well and gives me time to canvass new work to justify his wage

I am thinking of taking on a lad I know with Aspergers syndrome/disease...very part time at present...more of a 'feel good' thing....but with a little care and supervision these guys/gals can be a real benifit...but in the right situations.

Cheers
Dave.
