A door knocking question (again)
« on: November 02, 2009, 04:05:02 pm »
I have no more work planned or booked for the rest of this week, so it is my intention to spend the rest of it canvesing for new work.

But what I want to know, is it worth my while going out for about 9.30/10am start ?
In particular if there are any round builders looking in what kind of hours do you guys work ?

it all depends on when people will be in, if the area you are knocking is full of both people working, you might not get a lot of responce, but if a lot of wives are in,  like old people they are in, in the day, it might be worth it,   i would knock a area in the morning then knocking it again at night or at the weekend

You tend to get some area's with everyone out, and some with loads at home.  Round my way all the new build type estates are empty during the day as they're usually younger couples who both need to work to pay the mortgage.  The older houses with larger gardens in the leafy area's tend to have more retired owners and a larger percentage at home.

You could take plenty of cards/leaflets with you, then if no one's home you can still flyer/card the house.

The reason I'm asking is door knocking in the dark around 5-6pm although folks will be home they may be a bit reluctant to open the door to strangers when it's dark, not to mention it's harder to quote and see what access is like in the dark.

I'd say just do it.  It might be dark, but at 5, 6 or 7pm not too late IMO.   You could also just canvass in the day and catch a few other customers that see you when you go round cleaning, and then canvass the street again in the lighter months, having the advantage of saying "I clean mrs.xxx at number xxx across the road" and so on, gives them more confidence that your genuine etc.

Well I'll gauge it as I go then. If things are going ok and I end up picking up a few custies then I'll be more inclined to keep going longer. I suppose I'll just have to suck it and see.

I know that the houses where people are predominatly out during the day have responded well to leaflets i have put out on a Sunday afternoon. I have often wondered if it's to do with the fact that a leaflet comes through at a time when no others have and at a time when they are fairly chilled and have time to read it, or whether its because their only days off have been spent cleaning.

I do domestic cleaning but if i were cavassing i'd be doing it on a Saturday or Sunday.

Ok GD I'll give your hours of working a go today(the rain should be off by then). I suppose there is more chance of people being home later in the day, but it's not an exact science. But the more people you actualy speak to the more jobs your likely to get.

i sold door to door for quite a few years and people will open the door in the dark , we used to go round during the day and make notes on who who was out then knock those at night , anyone that did,nt answer we then knocked at the weekend , this works fro window cleaning as well and also helps you build a compact round regards alan

Well I went out at 2 till 5 today and picked up 8 new customers, pretty happy with that, but still lots of not at homes.
But why do some folk try and make out that areas belong to other cleaners. I had one today tell "I've already got a window cleaner, Joe Bloggs cleans this area" to which I reaplied "not all of it he doesn't, as I've picked up several already"

*Joe Bloggs is not his real name,  ;D

looks like you picked a half decent area by those results make sure you knock them in the evening and at the weekend you will deffo get quite few more , you could also try cleaning them as yopu pick them up, daytime i mean , i did that when i first started and used to earn about £75.00 a day regards alan
