Making Machine Quiet
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:43:13 am »
The real answer is to buy an new toy

I just wondered if any of you have tried to reduce the noise of your twin vacs.

I know you can by a siliencer , use an extra length of hose on exhust etc

But I was thinking of buying some car sound proofing material and mounting ir on the inside of the case.

Did consider the outside but that would look ugly.

Has anyone done it

Is this another one of my bath ideas to consign to the     No pile

My main oncern would be vac and pump
 over heating

Hi Colin

Nail, head and hit I think Colin. Putting a duvet around any motor is not a good idea. Sorry, don't have any other idea's for you other than, leave the machine outside. ;)

I use a silencer on the Ninja and it reduces noise considerably when outside i do not use it i like to create attention if i can.

Ian why do you need to silence a twin vac porty ???  Do you normally use it inside the house?  Or just to generally be more discreet?

I remember a little bit from what they taught me at school, about energy.  Your machine is turning electrical energy into kinetic (movement) energy.  Kinetic energy is then turned into sound energy as a by-product.  Making restrictions such as silencing the exhaust will lower the performance of the machine.  There isn't a great deal of energy there to start with so it will have an impact on performance.

Insulating the inside, I think you've answered your own question on that!  The inside of the machine is designed to allow air to flow around to cool the components, you'd be having lots of pump and vac failures if you padded the inside I think.

Not sure it would be enough but you could install low demand cooling fans in both sides of the case, the Alltec's and Airflex models use them. Car insulation is quite thin but I would still be concerned. I tend to leave the tripple vac machine outside and have never had a complaint, if I can get close enough or the weather looks iffy it stays on the van.

Insulation will add weight to the machine.

Insulation will help to increase the inner cabinets temperature.

The material, along with the potential to increase the cabinets temperature, may pose an extra fire risk.

If you really want to reduce the noice level, I would keep with the largest bore and shortest length possible of exhaust hose.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

You want Dynamat,it`s only as thick as roofing felt, you would be able to stick it on the inside of the case,so would still allow air to circulate in there

It ain`t cheap though  ;D

I think the manufacturers would have been aware of the noise levels during research & development, and if they could have got the same performance with quieter pumps and motors, I'm sure they would have added that as a major selling point.
Our latest machine, triple vac motors producing x cfm with a x psi pump but running so quiet a baby could sleep within 6 feet of the machine whilst in operation
As it is that is clearly not an option.....yet

Why do you want a quiet machine?

If and when I get  tm I  will be looking at ways to make it as loud as possible , in order to draw attention to it .

I would never use a porty inside a domestic.(IAQ)
