Hose reel idea..Any Good / done before?
« on: October 06, 2009, 07:09:17 pm »
After some research I think the best option would be to have a free standing hose reel but to use it in situ (and for safety) I was thinking of having it clamped / clipped down.  This way I could use it in situ if it was suitable to run hose direct out if back of van (when back van could be parked facing house) but I could make it free standing by unclipping / clamping it when I needed the flexibility.

Question:

1. What is the best way to have the hose reel secured in the van for stability but also for ease of removal?  Won't pipe clips become loose after a while??  What about metail spring clamps?  Has anyone done this before?

2. If I use the reel in situ I assume I will be able to just run the connection hose from the external van ports to the reel while in situ in the van without any problems.

Any views on this and if some has done something similiar then any pictures??  By the way - I don't want to drill holes in the van to run the hose out of.

Thanks

(Sorry for the repeated topic but want to get the best option and need experienced advice)

have mine screwed to a bit of board about an inch bigger all round than the "footprint" of the reel itself.

Never falls over and can be lifted out easily and still be stable on the ground.

Thanks.  I presume you take the reels out and clip them back in on a regular basis??  Or is it that you have never had the need to take them out??

If you do take them out what % of jobs do you have to have them free standing out of van??

Thanks

So is the reel secured in the van at all or just loose on the board??

How often do you take the reels out compared to leave them in van and work as if fixed??

Thanks

Its is screwed to the board and just sits in the van - fitts the space just right!

Very rarely take mine out, a low crime area where the doors can stay open, but am able to shut with pipe stuck in door!

My solution is a bit more radical with cutting a hole required :

You can get pipe clips from Screwfix wich lock and have a very high lbs rating (haven't fitted them on my van yet).

Thanks I saw that.  Good idea but didn't want to have the hole in the van.  I may look at the pipe clips option but didn;t know if they would be strong enough??  I assume I will be taking the reel out 50% of the time an having to re clip it again regularly.

i used the 22mil clips, never took the reel out...and they lasted a month before the movement of the van twisted them out of shape....

i have now drilled 4 holes through the bottom of the reel, and bolted it to the floor, never moves at all now.

And i never need to take the reel out, i got really sick og dragging it in and out.

gary.

Thanks for info on clips.

Don't you find the parking positioning of van an issue now the reels are fixed?  I'v e been told by a number of wcs that they have a problem with the reels fixed unless back of van is facing the house.  This is one of the reasons I wanted to avoid fixed reels.

No never had a problem,

After a while you get used to pulling up in the right place,

and i park at the top of a street pull the hose out and do all that side, then do the same at the other side,
or if its a cul-de-sac, i spin the van round and head as though i am leaving the cul-de-sac,

then park at the end and do the whole lot.

its the best move i have done.... you soon get fed up of humping it back in the van , and then securing it.... which i didnt, for a long time...and nearly damaged it...

Its simple, and not a hindrance at all. ;)

I've got the hozelok 2in 1 hose reel, it comes with bracket clips so you can attach it to the wall, so i,ve screwed these brackets to the floor of my van so i can either have it fixed or take it out altogether.

I have my output outside my van so i can lock the doors up and if anyone wants to lift the reel with the hosing they can and it means i dont have to worry, it falls over the odd time in the van but only slightly not enough to damage anything, i find it better this way that having it clamped inside meaning the doors have to stay open.
