Had a call yesterday, said "they cleaned their carpets with a Vax and its left a yellow stain" I immediately thought a browning problem and told them this.
Visited this morning but it doesn't appear to be the case, they cleaned them months ago and the yellowing appeared gradually, now they are moving out and are worried about their deposit from landlord.

Tried browning prescription of varying strengths as well as various other stain removers and even some Oxibrite but nothing even lightened it.
Anyone seen similar before or know what it might be?

 It looks like they could well have had a leak at some stage . Not noticeable until they have cleaned the carpet, looks like "wickback" to me from the photo .

I came to the same conclusion as you, did they have pets? just guessing as its by the garden door. Upset flower vase pollen stains perhaps?
I wonder if they are being completely honest as to what happened. Did they use a heavy duty high ph to clean the area as you come in to the room from the garden? Nice of you to try to help them but I think their deposit is going to take a pasting.

I was told Oxalic acid works for grass stains , yellow stains by an elderly lady that removed stain on clothes and rugs for a dye works. Never tried it but maybe some one with a chemistry back ground could answer this one.

Agree looks like pet stains to me. It could be wick back though as that looks like it's a felt backed carpet, almost certain they would of over wet it, it's easy to do. Could you lift it and take a peak at the back?

Looks like a pretty cheap piece of carpet.  They can probably match it (or near enough) at carpet rite, then get someone to chuck it down for a few quid. Would probably be a lot lower cost than biting the bullet and giving up some/all of their deposit.

I've heard of some shocking rip-offs by landlords and letting agents, holding back a whole deposit for damage to one room ,they could re-carpet the whole house for what they've charged in some cases.

If BP hasn't worked, that's a pretty good indicator you're up a blind alley

They do have dogs and I asked the question but of course they said no. There was no smell to back up the fact it might have been p**s.

After trying most things I had, explained to them it was most probably permanent and left it at that. Just took the picture to try and get an idea of what the problem might have been for future use.

Does look pretty permanent and as someone said it's not a high value carpet!

I would suspect a concrete floor and the alkalinity of the concrete could be a factor.

Pull the carpet back off the gripper, the backing and underlay will tell no lies both in appearance and smell.

   Try a UV light at least it would cancel out urine stains.
