Following on from Simons post , I thought it would be interesting to see how many have had this effect happen to them.

I have voted occasionaly, by that perhaps once every 6 months.

You can get it a lot with latex back carpets, always drop back down but can be dramatic at the time. Remember my first one and I was pooting myself.

3 happening in 3 days; weird!!.   Not really.   Weird (or wierd in your part of the world), but atmospheric conditions have a good deal to do wirh that

I warned it would happen on one a little while ago and said it would go back to normal after 24 hours.... It took a week ??? It was really slack and I advised a restretch....

Had a few , but all been the manmade jute backed, and made of nylon or polyamide.
Usually been the shadow pile/cut and loop sculptured type, all gone flat next day.

must of been atmospheric conditions in one room but not the rest of the house (even wierder)
my guess would be nylon content as it slackens when wet, but what do i know eh!
oh and yes, it was wierd. but obviously only in my part of the world ::)

I usually find when it happens the carpet is quite loose anyway and in need of re stretching. I often wonder is it the ''shock'' of the hot water suddenly hitting the carpet which causes it to relax or soften. Normally everything goes back to normal in a day or two.
I remember a carpet rippling in a house where an old lady lived. She suggested sticking a needle on the ripple to ''let out the air'', she must have thought it would be same as bursting a baloon  :).
