Just wondering if any of you portable operators have a problem with some carpets rippling when you've cleaned them?

And if so, do they Always go back, or have you had any that haven't? If they haven't, how have you resolved the situation with the client?

i presprayed a room once, went into the next room and presprayed then came back into the first room and didn't know whether to cry or get me surf board out, anyway, got on with it, extracted it and advised custy it would be back to normal in 24hrs. custy rang next day to say thanks and carpets were fine. phew!!!

A strange question Mr Gerrard     from some body of your experience I would have thought

t/m or porty  dont think it maked any difference , as I have used both and had the occasional rippling with both systems, never been a problem after it has dried out though . got to admit the first time it ever happened it was frightening

Normaly it tends to be foam backs when it happens most ,always warn the custy first the possabilty of it happening if you have the feeling it could ripple saves a little embarasment.

It hasn't happened to me! However someone I recently sold a portable machine to down south, has had it happen to him. That's why I was asking the portable guys! Thought I'd get some feedback from you guys on here before calling him back!

Sorry Geoff, I hadn't explained myself properly. It has happened to me with a truck mount and thankfully they have always gone back. However never with a portable machine. So before speaking with the guy I sold it to again, I thought I'd get some feedback from the portable guys on here.

Just wondering if it was the heat that did it, Doug did mention a few weeks ago that it could have something to do with the moisture content in the air not escaping therefore having saturated air and leaving more moisture in the carpet for longer.

I can see the theory but when you want to see a rippled carpet can you find one?

I had this happen to me a few days ago. Not on  a carpet it was a rug. JK gave me some good advice on how to dry them best. However I have to put that rippling down to not being laid completely flat while it was drying. But it went back after a few days.

I have had this on a carpet, I did panic a bit. I had to think what to do.

So I straightened it as much as possible, I re-wetted it,
(if thats existes I am sure you get the picture) and put weight on it, To hold it down.

went back a few days later and it was fine.

Rippling/ buckling carpets,
Normally this is caused by the secondary backing in the carpet expanding do to the heat
( happens alot more in synthetic carpets ).

Dave, not a good idea to put anything at all on a rippling carpet!!  It should be left alone to go back naturally, otherwise it may end up out of shape.

I don't believe heat is the main cause of rippling as I have had them ripple with just a small amount of warm or cold prespray and that is before the main rinse. There was a particular type of carpet that had a low level loop that was popular in the late eighties, and people used to put them in the kitchen, you only had to look at them and they rippled. It is definately something to do with just moisture in the backing and it does not need to be hot.

Have seen this sort of thing before. It could be as others suggest and may well return to normal..

...however, it could be delamination of the carpet. In other words the glue between the carpet and the backing has separated.

This could be due to wear (Was it rippled before cleaning?) or could be down to excessive heat during the cleaning process.

If it *has* delaminated there's not a lot you can do on a practical level.
