Ronnie, hope you get through this ok mate.

As for paying staff, my guys get £65 a day basic AFTER tax, they also get a bonus each week if all booked work is complete.  Depending on the workload that bonus can be anything from £30 to £100 each.

Overtime is paid at shared %age, that is, say we take on a £100 job that will get done after their 36hrs then I will split the money after costs, 50% - so say it costs £10 in fuel to go do this job, thats £90 split 50/50 = £45 each.

Once they have done their full week they have made me enough to warrant a bonus in some form or other.  At the end of the day, if they are paid well, they will have no need or desire to start up on their own and will put the little bit extra into the work that they do.  Both guys have been with us for quite a few years and I have no intention of ever letting them go, ok, so I'm not making £150 a day off each man but what use would that be if they never turned up for work, instead, I don't work them hard, I get a good reliable service from then and as a result I get a smaller return but a much more reliable return and a better working environment.

I've never been to bed with an ugly bird but I've woken up with loads!

This thread has been on here before, however, the way we work is 100% bonus, they get a %age of whatever work they do during the week, we have daily and weekly targets and they average between £16K - £20K pa.

New starters are on £6.50/hr for the first two months, if they are then good enough they then go on %age, if not they go!

just had a look through the records there and both guys got just over £21k each last year after tax, I would need to check with our accountant what it was before tax ( I know I should have that on our own records but I haven't - tut tut ) but I would reckon that would be somewhere in the region of £25k

Now if you are a sole trader, you will have at least £5k of expenses on top of that ( granted they are for the most part tax deductible ) but even so, you would need to turnover at least £30K to better that, now assume a 44wk working year, thats = £681/week.

Maybe I pay too much!! lol!!

BTW - thanks Matt

my system is similar to alans but not a % they have one target to meet and they mostly do it on 6 hour working days, don't bleed them dry, don't over work them and respect them and they will be loyal and work. there have been a couple along the way that haven't worked out and haven't respected the situation. they were outted instantly. i find the paranoia sometimes creeps in that something is not right but mainly its in my own head. i think my blokes have a pretty good ride.
