Masonry paint removal from concrete
« on: July 17, 2009, 08:15:53 pm »
Hi guys,
I've got a job where i need to remove blobs of white masonry paint from conrete. Its quite a large area.
I know pressure washing alone wont be up to it. I have tried some graffiti removal chemicals in the past but had no luck.

Has anyone come across this?
I assume I will need a chemical, but any suggestions?

FS10 is good gear, thing is you can only get it from Brewers in 20lt drums @ £120.
When you go to Brewers your'll see paramose paint stripper on the shelf in 5lt tins this is actually AS10 ok for oil base paints only,no good for your standard water/acrylic sandtex paint.
FS10 will also shift piolite paint which is resin based better than AS10
Cold pressure cleaning wont touch any masonary paint(100%) your better off with hot ;)
Been there,seen it,done it,just cant remember when

ok cool, I can get a hot washer for a few weeks. This job could be pretty sizable so buying in bulk wont be a problem.
This paint is spatters and blobs, so not solid paint, but lots of little bits.

Ok, Ive got 3 question:

How long would you have to leave the chemicals to let them set in to work?
And what coverage would you say you could get for 20ltrs?
Would I need to aggitate the paint once the chemcials are applied?

Thanks guys!

Depends on the thickness of the paint blob I would have thought.. around 15 minutes possble alot less. I have used it before on walls and its started working within 6 minutes.

Can't answer that as I have never use 20l in one whole application.

Possibly - mind you your presure washer should remove it... I would have thought you presure washer would agitate it enough. I know I would be agitated if I got squirted with a presure washer! ;D

Yopu might be best off testing a small area first

1. to see how long it takes on average
2.. to find out if you need to agitate it - I would have thought no need to. As your using a presure washer. If you were stripping would you would need to scrape away the paint, and wash down.

Hope this helps

yeah it does, cheers mate.
I am going to to have to a section at a time then.
How toxic is this paint stripper? It will be used in a ventilated area, but I know I will need gloves, but what other PPE do you think i will need?

PPE

Well if you must as with any chemicals best to wear a mask, Gogles, Gloves. Eye protection a must.

But if you are careful you wont need any. But that would be silly.

I had some spill on some clothes once and ruined them. Not that it mattered.

You could telephone the manufacturer or check on the tin/can it might give an overal coverage area.

but on a guess looking at a tin of paint, a 5 litre tin covers 30 square metres. So allow for a little bit of waste and I would say 100 square metres. That is of course not allowing for another application if required.

I would'nt use a paint brush probably best to put some on the ground and work with a roller or window cleaning applicator. .

Actually better still use bucket and a mop. I would tackle an area at a time instead of all in one go.

How many metres have you got to do?

Also i would find out if you are near a water course? can this be washed into a drain without any problems, is it bio degradable? need to find out these things out unless you want the Enviroment Agency on your case.

ive submitted my price, but i dont think ill get it.
Seems like they were too interested in what chemicals i would be using, and how to clean it! looks like they might try it themselves.
Ah well, win some lose some

I spoke to the guys at graffitihotline.co.uk among others.
They have been good in the past, best stuff for graffiti removal. They suggested some of their stuff to use.
If I get the go ahead for the job i will give the guys you mentioned a call and ask for some prices. there's none on there website.
