Split relay
« on: May 20, 2009, 08:12:43 pm »
I have been using a 100 amp split relay in my previous van (Iveco Daily with a 110 amp main battery) to charge 2 x 110 amp leisure batteries with no problems what so ever.

I have now bought a VW Transporter with a 65 amp battery. Is it possible to use my old 100 amp split charge relay in my new van or will it have to be wired up differently owing to the new style alternators with three wires instead of two. It's a little bit confusing at the moment so need some advice from a VW owner who has fitted a relay themself.

Had to have a 'smart 30 amp split charge relay' fitted which charges straight from the alternator instead of from the battery. It ensures the van battery is always topped up before trickle charging auxiliary batteries up to 30 amps so as not to let auxiliary batteries run too low after big jobs where pump and heater left continuously running for long periods.
