half decent
about £5000 for kit
about £5000 for advertising for the first year,
decent reliable van £3000
£1000 set aside just incase
might get £20,000 back in the first year if your lucky

then youve got other expenses like software, accountants fee's etc...

second and third year should yield far better returns if your good at what you do.

think of it as an investment in your future and yourself.

ps... i'm just chunnering while i label up spotter bottles, gets boring after 50 ;D

Adam,
You could get away with working out of your car when I started up in 1980 and still be regarded as professional (just about) however not today, you really need a van.

i agree with derek on his figures you have to give off a prof image. his numbers are about right. equipment maybe little less to get you started but you soon end up getting few extra bits after few months.

I would go out with 2 or 3 professionals to get a feel then go on a one day course, then use some of your money to advertise with get a few booked in jobs and hire the equipment see if you like the job and in the process you'll get some money back in to pay for equipment.

Just walked home up our road and there's a guy loading some Prochem chemical, a bucket and a single jet, non-swan-neck wand into his boot and some small tub-like machine on the back seat of his saloon.

Said to the lady, "Hope he's done a good job?"

She said,"Nothing but the best, he's my brother. Why do you ask?"

"I'm Dr Carpet."

"O, yes" she says, "You live somewhere around here, I think."

"Yes. You can see where my (sign-written) van is parked; thirty yards up the road"

(And where it has been parked for the last 10 years.)
