I have worked for ISO 9001 companies, but never needed to bring my company to that level.

A lot of people cant see the point of of The FED and Safecontractor etc, but i can see the point very CLEARLY

It's a very good thing to have as it is standard across all industry and will mean more clowt than safecontractor. The only thing I can advise Dave is there is a lot of paperwork to do and you have to audit yourself regularly.

You then have visits on a yearly basis. Good if you a small company as you can control but if you are large then can be a nightmare trying to get everyone to adhere to the standards.

I think the Safecontractor comparison refers to ISo 14001

Dave,

It will be around a month's work for who ever you subbed it out to. You will be surprised at the amount of paperwork involved. Then when revisited the manual will need rewriting every year after the audit is done.

You have to do an internal audit and then external once a year. A lot of hassle , that is why it is a highly acknowledged accreditation.

For a small business your size it will be an awful lot of money to invest. This was one of my major pet hates when working in industry but is good to keep your house in order.

we had it for about four years they came to audit once a year spent about an hour at our office and charged about £400 for the priveledge, in the time we had it we didnt find any advantage in gaining work from it.

you can go on an internal auditor course for yourself to carry out audits. Loads of work involved. It's basically a very large paper trail to say that what you have in your managemnt procedure sis what is carried out to and adhered to by your workforce.

don't make it too fancy keep it simple and organise an audit plan for over the year with different audits carrie dout each month on different aspects of the business

finance
proceddures
H&S
etc etc etc

if you don't keep the system up to date then it falls apart and is of no use. all paperwork shets you use must also be par tof a controlled document system and any ammendments must be the be issued with new doc control number.

David, we looked at this some years back! and end of the day you only do things to get more work! and if aim total honest! it may get you some work but your be doing more work running the ISO!! so I would say no! dont waste your time and make life easyer for your self!

But I do know that Scott Adams has poked fun at ISO 9000 on numerous occassions:

You know; that cartoon has given me an idea for a mailshot to a management company that I know will only use OCS, because they're some sort of accredited firm!
