how are company positions on google maps worked out.

when I do  a search often a map is at the top with the area I searched and a list of carpet cleaners next to it, they seem to be a mixed collection (not sponsored listing companies)

how is the top position awarded?

Mike

As Ryan said.

I think It is done by the post code of the business. The address nearest to the area that you type in should come up at the top. It doesnt seem to work the way its supposed to. I get apollo blinds in my area under carpet cleaning  ???

it can't go on postcode, if I change 1 word (but I'm the same website  with the same postcode)

if I type 'leather' I have 2 of the top 3

 if I type 'carpet' i'm 18th

if I type 'upholstery' i'm 6th

Hi Guys

Like a lot of Google things it's a bit of a mystery.

Post code is definitely a factor, as is description as is time since added.

Cheers

Just added mine recently, if its based on postcode then how does it work out wider area searches? For example searching by the county name, closet to the centre of the county?
Just wondering ???
