What are you desperate?
Yeah I think 3 hrs is too much. You might underestimate the pulling power of Eastenders and Corrie, which will give people the right ump, if you knock whilst there watching. Knock it on the head at 7 latest.

Why not try door knocking all day Saturday's. They are more likely to be in and not watching TV. I would of thought you would do quite well.

Gemma didn't specify the time he/she would be canvassing!  This could be from 4pm till 7pm; and he/she could class this as 'night'!

But if anyone canvassed my house right now; at 8.35 pm; I'd be cross, but reasonable, since I suspect they must be really desperate for work.

I'd probably bung them a fiver too; just out of pity.

Starting at 4.30 pm is too early. Kids etc just got home from school.

5.30 pm is a good time to start.  7.30 is a good time to finish.

LOADS of canvassing experience has taught me this. Saturdays aren't bad either but you won't find as many people at home as in the evenings. Take flyers out with you and every door that you don't get an answer from pop one in. Make a note of the street and number and go back a few days later. This way you will end up with as compact a customer base as poss from canvassing.

Also when cleaning anywhere that you only do a few in a street pop flyers through the 2 doors each side of the house/houses you are cleaning. Takes very little time but it does work.

Hope this helps

pointless collecting/canvassing before 5.30 as people not home from work or eating tea
Quote

We don't eat 'tea' in our house, we drink it; we have dinner around seven!

But if you knock on my door in the evening - after I've had a tough day of graft - and try to flog me something; I'll set the dog on you.

I personally would recommend leaflets and canvassing on a Saturday.

Honestly it will vary a lot. Even street to street. Don't be scared at all. Just be polite and look decent and you will have nothing to worry about. It isn't a hard sell. It's just a question really asking them if they want a good window cleaning service. In knocking thousands of doors I only ever got one rude reply. One litle tip.. just remeber the next door you knock could be your next new customer  :)

Honestly canvassing to get a compact round can take you years.
I dont know what your set up is, but my advice would be to buy a few rounds that overlap each other. I think you said youre a postie SO YOU MUST HAVE A BIT OF BUNCE AVAILABLE. Get a few hundred peeps on yer books, and you will recoup yer money quickly and have an established business to build upon. Still canvass by all means to improve your business.
Speculate to accumulate an all that.

,only posh gets have dinner at night  ;D ;D

You reckon?

Forces personell get 'NATO standardised' into breakfast, lunch and dinner, because stuff like having 'dinner' at 'lunchtime' can become confusing when you've got a 'proper job'.

I'm sure most of the ex forces window cleaners here use the terms breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and I bet they're far from being posh.

in industrial Lancashire its dinner and tea ie dinnertime and teatime  ;D

Hey,

That's really interesting; I've spent an evening in Preston and was abused by some fat woman; I'll never go back there again.

However, Gemma wants to know the best time to go canvassing and I think we ought to help him or her out.

I reckon the best time is on a Saturday; between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm.

If you canvass in the evenings you'll be pecieved as a pain in the arse; but that's my opinion.

Early evening and weekends. remember you are starting a business, but you need to have a life, also you want to look after the custs you have already make sure they are done but also don't get to far ahead with canvasing so you can keep up with new custs.
in my humble, look at where your work is now group it as best you can, then the week before you do an area canvis that area, that way you can work new jobs in for that week and no one is kept waiting.
