Hi all,

Im looking to take on more work so that I can expand and take on another person,

Has anybody on here ever done any canvassing by phone for example through the yellow pages etc.

If so, what technique do you use and what do you say?

And help would be greatly appreciated,

I've never canvassed by phone but I have used the Yellow pages etc to target groups of potential customers such as care home managers, property management company's etc. I've always found it best to do a bit of research on the organisations you want to work for, find out the name's of the appropriate contacts, then write to them offering a free survey and quotation explaining the services that you feel could be of benefit to them. A good brochure sent with a covering letter is also quite effective. I gained work this way so can recommend this approach if your looking for new business.

I think you'll find this is called 'Cold Calling' and is no longer allowed in this country, at least in the domestic market place.

Only if the recipient of the call has signed up to the 'no cold calls' register.  Snag is it costs you a fortune to access the register to see if your prospective 'callee' is on it.

Last year someone local to me must of done telecanvassing , as they phoned half my custies up  They must like me as i did'nt lose one 
But they where not happy about it , most said how can you quote a house over the phone it's stupid ( not my comment )
I have done it for hotels ,care homes , schools and a hospital but not houses.

It's called the telephone preference service. I got my phone numbers listed a few years ago because I was always being interrupted with pointless sales calls when I was trying to work. You do need to re-list your number from time to time to keep it effective.

I had this problem as well 4 customers on same road. god knows how and where these companies find every phone number from a street. I was lucky and didnt lose any also. What  ped me off was they were saying to my custys that they would do it cheaper without even seeing the house.

When the first one told me i thought cheeky gits but after two weeks i told them i think half the island has been phoned up. They even phoned my mum !

Absolute nonsense , i cold call domestics all the time , especially in winter months and i am so far free from incarceration!

Thanks for the replies,

I did mean for properties like hotels, care homes, showrooms etc,

Theres no way id even consider going thru the phone book and calling residential customers. It would be too much of a pain,

I prefer to get out on my feet for domestics picking and chosing the jobs that I fancy doing and speaking to the customers face to face.

Maybe you should try it , i have done very well and although it is very much a scatter gun approach if you are using a phone book local to you then you know which addresses to skip (flats/council estates etc) i have found it a good way to get into addresses that you wouldnt canvass because
a. you did not know the road existed
b. big houses/long drives

also when you get a hit you can door knock on the neighbours.
like any sales the results are up and down but i swear by it.

also i find that if you get a hit on the telephone people like that approach more and in my experience you can get a top end price out of them.
