Hi
We have found the only way to keep debts down is to collect.

In a word, Yes. Whether it's the best method of getting paid is another argument. I use it and love it. Question: Would you rather be sitting there reading this or knocking on doors?

I'm happy to give my details out as they would appear on a cheque anyway.  Of course someone with a fair bit of savvy might be able to figure out your mother's maiden name or your date of birth etc so might be a good idea to fakle the maiden name.
The way I am currently doing it is stapling a note to my bills stating that I am now able to accept payments by internet banking and that all anyone has to do is to phone me for my details.  Abbey (the bank I use) has only very recently upgraded the business accounts so it's now possible to get a customer's reference number (that you supply them with) as soon as the payment is received.  As a reference I use housenumber(or abbreviation of house name) plus postcode and record customers' reference numbers in my database.

All but 6 of my customers pay via bank transfer and I am more than happy for you to have my bank details...it can only be used to put money into my account...

I think people need to enter the real world and realise that having a bank account number does not give them control of my life..

Cheers
Dave.

Didn't Jeremy Clarkson do that in his newspaper column, claiming it was perfectly safe to do so? Then somebody used the details to donate £500 of his money to a charity. I wouldn't do it...  ;)

That's right.  It did happen.  I think that a key point with this is that only trusted organisations can take direct debits and to be able to take a DD without a signature requires a greater level of trust.  The bank are obliged to refund anything like this as soon as a complaint is made.  Whoever made the transaction must have woirked for such an organisation and have been able to cover up which specific person did the deed.  I reckon that it only happened because it was on national TV.  The chances of this happening in day to day life are pretty remote as relatively few people have access to such a system and many of them would not be able to cover their tracks.  For instance, I very much doubt it would be possible to do this for personal gain because individuals are not authorised to take DDs - only certain bona fide customers.  Therefore there would be no incentive.  Someone just wanted to make Jeremy Clarkson look like a plonker - something for which he needs little assistance.

I asked my bank about this, the guy there pointed out that if you write a cheque you give all your bank details and your address and a sample of your signature.
if you offer direct banking as a payment option then you only have to give your details when asked for them.
he said it was just as risky as any other method outwith cash transactions, and cash increases the chance of mugging

get all your customers phone numbers/e mail address and instead of wasting hours collecting(when 50% of them are not in anyway) you can spend half an hour on the phone (in the warm) chasing them up that way.
several of my customers pay by bank transfer and the more the merrier as far as i am concerned

Some of my custies send me cheques, some leave money in hiding place, ones that are in pay obviously. The rest get collected next time. I dont do collecting anymore as I find it a waste of time.
