Lower it or loose it !
« on: December 09, 2008, 06:31:08 pm »
Did a job today,a monthly commercial £15 takes about 15 mins,
the manager comes out and says "i`m sorry mate but head office say we can`t afford window cleaning anymore, but do them this time being as you have turned up and if it was up to me i would let you carry on if i could afford it my self",
so i say "ok you have my number, let me know if anything changes"
so as i`m doing the job it got me thinking with all this credit crunch going on this was my first job to loose was this the start of it for me,
now this actual job is a real nice easy job and i enjoy doing it,so i came up with an idea,
i suggested to the manager i would do the job every 6 weeks and do it for £10 (being as he would be paying for it himself),

Now have any of you done this just to keep a job or don`t you ever lower your prices ?
have i done the right thing just to keep the job baring in mind i may or may not loose more with this credit crunch   :-\

I haven't been asked to so far but if I was and it was a well paying job that I enjoyed doing then yes I guess i would drop my price to keep it. My only fear would be word getting round and more and more customers wanting a discount.

As long as you are still making a good enough profit on it, then I suppose its better to keep it.

But don't make a habit of it! >:(

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

well ye profits profit to me i would prefer to be making something than nothing and i could probably get that job down to 10 mins  ;D

ive had a few cancellations but most of them i turned round with longer frequencys of 8 and some 12 weekly visits,

offer customers a way out if you let them go they will 9 times out of ten get someone else purely because they are too embarassed to ask you back

when you offer the customer a longer frequency between cleans, do you increase the price or leave it the same.
eg.  £10 - 4wks
       £11 - 8wks
       £12 - 12wks

at a pound a minute its no wonder you got the chop

I Disagree ive got commericial jobs where it works out £3 - £4 a min. But with the C***** Cr**h  ;D you going to have to sometimes budge on prices as there's always someone out there willing to do it cheaper.

I would always be more inclined to extend the frequency for the same price e.g. from 4 to 6 weeks etc. rather than drop the price, would be very difficult for me to approach people with a 50 % price rise once the economy shows signs of recovery.
But then again you say it takes you 15 mins, maybe it was overpriced , I myself would be happy with a tenner.

if its a new job i do charge more for longer frequencys, if its an exsisting customer cancelling because of money i leave it the same,
they think im doing them a favour and are more likely to accept new terms rather than cancel altogether, while i have the same price it will be easier to increase frequency in the future than it will prices

I have a commercial contract for a block of fancy apartments near the sea front. Originally I had been doing them every month for x amount. They wrote a letter stating that they wanted to drop to once every 3 months to save money, could I submit a new quote for every 3 months. I wrote back with a quote but also a paragraph explaining that the windows would be filthy after 3 months and I would have to charge 1.5x for the job. Alternatively I suggested that I keep the price the same, but drop the frequency to once every two months. They wrote back accepting the bi-monthly option.

I found out later that they had also put it out to tender to try and save money as well, but I was the best value.

At least the guy came and spoke to you and gave you the chance to weigh up your options.
Usually just get a letter and thats that. You're gone!!

We have similar, just done some build cleans, which i hate. Not made a fat lot on either.

I,m just chasing the wages as they say. Looking to down size & sell of eqiupment at moment.

Not been paid yet from that big job either that we spoke about, plus got 3 more bad debts aswell, so not looking rosy.

That`s how much you should be earning for every minute that you work, work it out over the course of a day and it won`t be far off. ;D
