Trad guys will love this!!
« on: October 18, 2008, 12:43:53 pm »
I am mostly WFP.

Now here is the question.

We have this prehistoric trad w/c who does this very nice hotel in town.

The windows absolutely gleam. I dont know what he uses or does but the glass looks like it cristal.

Have even thought of spying up on him to get his secret!!

I dont think pure water would get that shine.

The windows are square leaded. I wondered if it was the lights from the inside that were reflecting on the glass to get that gleam.

So come on you trad boys this Water fed pole boy is groveling for an answer  :-[

Well that's squeegee cleaning for you.

It's always shinier than wfp, as wfp takes everything off the glass.
Trad leaves a shiny finish from the washing up liquid.
Hence what the dust sticks to that people talk about on here.

Just like when you do the washing up with it.
They advertise shiny dishes don't they?

I allways find if   u clean a window trad yes they shine great but if u clean a window and buff it up with scrim like a leaded window they shine even more than trad. So maybe thats why?

thats what i think anyway  :P

I also do both but my customers tell me the complete opposite. They use the word 'clean' when describing the results from Trad cleaning but from the start they've used words like 'shiny/sparkling' when describing the results from WFP.

However, I have found that since using Ettorre Squeegee Off I get better results from my Trad cleaning

Not sure about this stuff. Reckon Fairy is just as good and it costs far less. I have an old bottle of Ettorre and it says on the bottle "without amonia"...so?

I think a lot of the above is pure rubbish.

My own house windows come up perfect with WFP; usually; but they're faultless if I do a decent job.

And I mean faultless.

They were done inside and out on Thursday, and the only faults I can pick up (if I'm being picky) is the insides!

That's not what we were talking about. ??? ;D

The point was that trad windows shine more, not cleaner.

In response to the first post, if the glass is original and ancient it will shine far more than modern glass, todays modern finish is sort of matt...not as smooth as the old fashioned hand rolled glass, and I think that it makes no difference if it is cleaned with WFP or trad, that stuff comes up fantastic either way.

So for me it isn't the method that makes the biggest difference, it is the type of glass and the way it is manufactured.

I have heard the solution from trad master:

1. Clean the windows
2. Add 3-4% of glycerine to the water + some drops of sal ammoniac.
3. Clean the windows with this solution
4. Windows become brand new and glare

I used to do a bit of work for a guy who was seriously getting on in years and still frequently used a chamois leather and scrim for old leaded windows! But he wouldn't use any detergent he used just plain tap water, but I could never get used to a chamois so I used a wet scrim in plain water and a dry micro fibre and you wouldn't believe the shine!
I still sometimes use this method on new leaded windows and it works even better!

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have tried this though!

How do you know he is using washing up liquid ::)

I clean church windows and a pub windows (both leaded) and they gleam lovely.....with WFP ;D

Once again, lots of presumptions :o
Why oh Why did he spell my name as bod & not bob on my wedding invites.

Do you really care about a 'shine'?

We're window cleaners; just clean them and get paid; leave the fussy stuff for the guys with an obsesive compulsive disorder.
