Matt, almost certainly they will pay while you're convalescing...but they'll be on the phone practically weekly asking if you're fit enough to go back to work.

I had this years ago when my job looked dodgy and I had mortgage protection. When I eventually did get canned I claimed...yes they paid my mortgage but kept phoning me asking what I was doing about getting another job etc...!

thats good enough for me, im not after something for nothing, this will be the test of if this policy is worth it, as ive paid over 2 and a 1/2 K into it, if its hard to get the money out of them for the few weeks im off, then it will be binned, i only had it if i have a long term illness or injury that would mean im in strife, 2 - 6 weeks without any money i can handle, its the long term threat that keeps me paying

The other thing Matt is be prepared for them asking whether the hernia was a "pre-condition"...

I tell you the insurance companies are scum...they take the premiums then when there's a claim their 1st thoughts are: "How do we get out of paying?"

Matt - how long is the deferred period - ie the time between sickness occuring and payout clicking in?

Another pre-condition I came across when I was offered one of these type insurances some years ago was that whatever was preventing me from working had to hospitalise me for at least one night.

So if an injury was serious enough to keep me off work for 2-3 months or longer, but didn't require an overnight stay in hospital at the start, I would have recieved zilch.

This wasn't told to me when I applied for the insurance. It was buried in the ton of small print that came with the policy and I only I discovered this when I took the time to read it.

I also discovered the differed period before payment was 13 weeks by which time I would likely have been back at work.

you can choose it, it was either straight away, after 1 week , 1 month or 3 months, the longer the cheaper the premium, i went for 1 week

the big question you need to ask is how long do they pay out for many of the cheaper policies only pay out for 1 year and give insurer option of refusing to re- cover you. wher as other policys will pay out till a given age. so be careful p.s. i wouldnt touch combined insurance services of america cheap but loads of get out clauses with them 8)

My accountant has told me to put some money away for eventualities rather than paying it into a policy because what you get back against what you pay in its hardly worth it.
